Glossybox April 2017 was dedicated to spring clean with a keep “the good and conventional” products theme. The design of the box was as always the standard pink Glossybox but that’s ok, these boxes still make amazing storage and gifting options.
The products included this month were, from left to right as shown in the picture, a 2 in 1 hair shampoo/conditioner, a mascara, a contour stick, an antibacterial hand wash gel and an eyebrow pencil. So let’s go in a little more detail as to how each product performed.
Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
- Elgon Deliwash Cleansing ConditionerTiare
This product is supposed to be a combination of a hair shampoo and conditioner, 2 in 1, for all those times that you are in a hurry and don’t have time to use separate products. It is supposedly suitable for all hair types but works best for coloured hair and enhances afro and curly hair. It is apparently free from sulphates, salts and artificial colours, statements which are not strictly true if you look at the ingredients.
It has a thick, white cream consistency exactly like a conditioner or a hair mask and the smell is subtle but pleasant. It doesn’t really “foam up” when you rub it through your hair which makes it difficult to know in which sections of your hair you applied this product to. My hair didn’t feel “squeaky” clean after using this but did feel quite soft. After drying, my hair was nicely controlled and freeze free and although it looked cleaner than before, it looked exactly like the day before you decide to wash your hair. Clean but borderline dirty. If you use this on a daily basis then this would be fine for you, although, why would you wash your hair on a daily basis? If you want your “clean” hair look to last longer than a day, this might not be a good option. This is exactly why you are not supposed to use a conditioner all over your hair, but rather only at the tips, because you end up with a “dirtier”, less volume, look.
To be honest, I don’t think this product will, as their marketing says, “revolutionise morning showers” simply because if you are in that much of a hurry that you don’t want to use a separate conditioner, why would you not just use a dry shampoo spray (like the Batiste ones which work wonders) and not have to deal with wet hair at all? I do like the simple, pretty but elegant packaging though. SCORE = 6/10
- Rodial Glamolash Mascara XXL
Personally, I’ve never heard of this brand but this is one of the reasons why I like these beauty boxes, to try new products and brands. This black mascara definitely increases the length of lashes and lasts all day. It has a faint cosmetic-chemical smell but that’s very common with mascaras. You probably won’t even notice it. I love the packaging it is very sleek, simple but nice. The applicator wand is just a standard brush with no curving or anything extra special. What I love the most about this mascara is that it doesn’t leave little black bits on the lashes and it applies evenly. SCORE = 8/10
- Rodial Glamolash Mascara XXL
- ModelCo Contour Stick
ModelCo is a well-known brand so it’s always nice to find products like this one in subscription beauty boxes. This was the one product that they featured last month as a sneak peak, so it wasn’t a surprise. I usually avoid cream contouring products as they tend to be difficult to blend and sometimes can even move your foundation around which is, to say the least, very annoying. However, this product was very creamy and buttery and it blended in very easily, with bond my hands or a beauty sponge. You could almost blend it out into nothingness which is not bad at all. In this way you can keep applying layers until you are happy with the intensity and if you make a mistake you can easily correct it. The “stick” form of this product does make contouring very easy, especially defining sharper areas like your nose or jawbone! I love the pink packaging and the fact that you don’t have to sharpen this, you simply just unscrew more of it out.
It has a sweet smell which reminds me of caramel chocolate (which is actually close to the colour)! The only drwaback is the actual colour of the product. It is a light brown colour with an orange hint to it which is not exactly a colour I would use for contouring. I would have preferred a slightly darker, with no orange hint, brown, like the colours you find in bronzers as they give a much more natural look.
Apparently, you can also use this as an eye shadow or lipstick! I wasn’t brave enough to try this on my eyes but it is lovely on the lips. The buttery texture makes your lips soft and it doesn’t feel like you are wearing anything. The colour though, again not my favourite, would suite darker or tanned skin tones. I love that you can use this product in more than one ways. SCORE = 7/10
- Merci Handy Love and Hand Cleansing Gel
This is such a cute little bottle that it went straight into my handbag. Everyone needs an antibacterial gel, especially if you suffer from dry hands. Constantly washing your hands with soap and water can leave them even drier, so this is a nice alternative especially if you are on the go. It has a sweet but “clean” smell and a thin gel texture.
This watery pink gel also contains blue beads but don’t worry these are not like the scrub beads that harm marine life, they do dissolve in your hands and disappear. I am definitely going to use this until it runs out! This was also a product that varied in other boxes with other subscribers receiving this product in different scents. This was a full size product and retails for £2.90 which admittedly is a little expensive if you consider that you can easily buy products like this for a pound. SCORE = 9/10
- SportFX Shape Up Brow Pencil
This was also one of the products that differed in other April Glossyboxes. Some people seem to have received an eyeliner from this brand instead of the brow pencil which made me a little jealous. I would have preferred that because I don’t use eye brow pencils often! Perhaps Glossybox can put a “products you use often” or “never use” section in the personal beauty profile that each subscriber creates!
Anyhow, I did like that I was out of my comfort zone, which as I mentioned before is part of the fun of these boxes. I thought I had thick eyebrows but damn this product did make them look even fuller. I received the colour “brunette” and although I am a brunette, my eyebrows are naturally a little darker than my hair (go figure) so this colour didn’t match perfectly. However, once you blend it in and comb the eyebrow hair in place, it all looked natural and the colour was ok. It is a double ended product with one side containing the eyebrow pencil and the other a spooly brush. The pencil is angled, appearing like a triangle if you look at it from the top, which actually makes it easier to use on the eyebrows. It can be a little streaky but once your brush and blend it in with your eyebrows it is all fixed. It has a standard cosmetic, but pleasant smell and the packaging is simple but sleek.
I love the idea of the SportFX brand, makeup for the gym goers or people on the go, although it is really not advisable to wear makeup while you are in the gym. Not so much because you look like a sweaty Barbie doll but more because when you sweat your pores open and will get clogged up with whatever you have on your face leading to zits and blackheads. No one wants that!
True to the SportFX branding though, this product was waterproof but to an extent. It did not come off under water but did slowly fade until it eventually disappeared (if you rub it under water). This was also a full size product that retails for £7.99 which is a very good, affordable price. SCORE = 8/10
Overall I did like the contents of this box, Glossybox is consistent with producing nice interesting boxes and I love that two out of 5 products were full size. The only negative thing I have to say this month is that perhaps as a collection, besides the hair shampoo/conditioner, the other products were all “small things”.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.6/10
Star product = Merci Handy Love and Hand Cleansing Gel.
