May’s Look Fantastic Subscription Beauty Box carried a “get the glow” theme. The theme is very exciting indeed as summer is coming up and it’s definitely the right time of the year for a little make up and skin care glow. This month’s quote inside the box was “The glow and energy of a healthy woman is the ultimate beauty, the only beauty that will last”. Couldn’t agree more!
The box design is absolutely gorgeous. It is all shades of pink and white and says “Get the glow” with gold letters in the middle. Very, very beautiful box indeed!
This month the box contained 7 products and the two monthly magazines that always accompany this box, a small Beauty magazine and a travel size full version of ELLE magazine. As always, very good value for money.
From left to right, the products were: a hair styling oil, a face exfoliating gel, an eye shadow, a tanning mist, a cleansing cloth, another cleansing cloth and a body scrub.
So lets dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!
System Professional Luxe Oil Reconstructive Elixir
I had to actually look this product up because it was not clear from the bottle or the beauty magazine that the box came with, how to use this exactly. It is apparently a styling oil so you can use it on dry hair to “calm down” fizzy hair or style your hair in a certain way.
It is supposed to nourish your hair and make it softer. I definitely noticed the softer effect but it is almost impossible to know if it actually nourishes or not.
The bottle is very nice. It definitely has a good branding presentation and looks professional. It is clearly well thought out especially if you notice that the back sticker has a golden colour which makes the liquid inside appear golden, even though it is actually clear. That golden appearance definitely makes it more attractive to use especially as a hair product. Very clever packaging and nice looking.
It has a pump so you can easily get small amounts of the product. It of course feels oily on the hands before applying but that’s expected. Using too much of it will make your hair look dirty but again that’s true with any styling product, especially oils. So make sure to only use this on the roots of your hair and maybe tiny amounts elsewhere if you struggle with frizzyness.
Apparently, there are many ways you can use this. According to their website you could even mix a few drops of this with a hair mask. Personally, I think it works best on its own as a styling oil. Hair masks are very specifically designed and already “calm down” hair so mixing this in will likely make your hair look dirty.
This hair oil smells really nice, nothing specific just a general nice hair product smell. Will definitely use this until it’s empty. SCORE = 8/10
Real Chemistry Luminous 3-minute peel
This small sample will last you only a couple of uses, especially if you use it on the neck too. The packaging is a simple tube with a standard quality and a metallic brown colour. The first thing that comes to mind when looking at this is tanning products so the presentation is a little confusing.
I used this scrub after I already cleaned my face and I must admit I didn’t think skin can feel more clean than squeaky clean! This clear gel is supposed to bind to dead cells (is that even true? Scientifically this is a huge claim) and give you the same result as exfoliation without the use of any beads or scrubbing materials. The clear gel slowly becomes solid as you rub it on your skin so in a way you do end up using “scrubbing beads”. If it does truly remove dead cells this is definitely a kinder to the skin, exfoliation method.
Would I purchase this? Unfortunately, no. The smell really killed this product for me. I can only describe it as a “poo” smell. Not super strong but unpleasant enough. Do give this product a try though as different people perceive smells differently and it might not smell that bad to you. It smells nice in the bottle and only smells foul when using it on the face. If you don’t mind the smell and if this truly exfoliates then this has the potential to be an amazing product. Unlike its name, this is not a peel product. SCORE = 7/10
Mellow Baked Eye Shadow in Cream
This is a nicely sized eye shadow product (3.0g). The packaging is very standard but nice looking. Nothing that gives an “expensive” or “quality” feeling though.
Unfortunately, this eye shadow doesn’t last very long. It has a lot of fall out and not much colour pay off. This is more likely the eye shadow colour you will use to highlight inner eye corners or brightened certain parts rather than as a standalone solid colour. With that being said, that is a very important step in eye makeup so this should hold a place in your makeup kit.
There are other brands though that offer a little more quality and colour pay off and last much, much longer, even for eye highlighters, so I don’t think I would purchase this. SCORE = 5/10
H2O Gradual Tan Mist
This is a clear liquid mist in a spray bottle that is supposed to hydrate and nourish skins as well as give you a gradual tan. It was very easy to apply. Almost like spraying water. The consistency is very easy to work with and I love that it is a clear liquid as opposed to a coloured or even white cream. Don’t know why. Just appears and is easier to use I guess. The fact that it is a spray as well means that you really don’t need to spend too much time applying a tan, literally you spray and go.
It took a couple of minutes to dry but not too long, same amount of time as it would take for a cream to be absorbed. During the drying process it did feel slightly sticky but that’s ok you are not supposed to touch it and that feeling completely disappears when its dry. There was no immediate change in colour until the next day when the colour started developing. See picture: top is without spray, bottom is with 1 application of spray (yes in the name of testing I ran around with half a tanned leg!). It does make quite a difference in colour even after only 1 application so don’t go crazy with this. The colour did appear a little orange to me but to be honest that’s the same with a lot of tanning products. Let’s face it, nothing really beats a natural tan.
I am under the impression that the colour kept developing and getting darker over a few days but I haven’t specifically tested for this, just an impression. It might be best to use this once and let it develop for a few days before re-applying. Everyone’s skin will react differently so give it a little test drive first.
I like the bottle even though it is very simple. It is definitely a practical and nice looking packaging. And as I mentioned, extra points go to the fact that it is a clear spray. This bottle will last you longer than you think as 1 application gives so much colour and the spray mist ensures that you are using as much product as needed and should be evenly distributed, mistakes that are very easy to do with cream tanning products. The smell is very pleasant, reminds me of a subtle hair spray. SCORE = 8/10
Nuface PREP-N-GLOW Textured Cleansing Cloth
This box sadly, contained two cleaning cloths. I say sadly because the Glov one below was so good, that this will look worse than it actually is. They should have left this one for another box.
This cloth is supposed to clean, exfoliate and hydrate so in a way it has a completely different use and can’t really be fairly compared to the Glov. However, it is not clear whether this cloth is reusable or not, although the fact that it is apparently enriched with Hyaluronic acid (see my post on Hyaluronic acid) sort of implies that it is a one-off use. It looks like any other thick wipe cloth with one smooth side and one side that has little bumps (see picture) which are supposed to exfoliate.
I didn’t feel that my skin was specifically hydrated, but neither dry. It did definitely clean and give a nice cleansed feeling without striping away all the natural skin oils.
This is a product that is most useful when travelling for a week and you don’t want to carry an exfoliation cream with you but rather you can take this little cloth, use and throw away. However, I don’t really see this being used on a normal living basis, the standard exfoliation creams are definitely better than this. Extra points though on creating an interesting product that has some cosmeceutical (term for a cosmetic with “pharmaceutical like” effects) function and a double sided texture. SCORE = 7/10.
Glov Hydro Dermaquillage Cleaning Cloth
This is a small cloth that fits on your finger, a bit like a finger puppet (see picture) and it is supposed to remove make up with the use of just water. I must admit my initial thought was “yea right”. To my surprise, this little cloth did indeed remove my make up with the use of just water. I even cleaned my face afterwards with a make up wipe hoping to find that some make up was left behind but there was nothing! This does clean very well! Note though that I went over the skin twice.
According to the instructions you can use soap to clean the cloth and then use again. I used hand soap which worked as well because…who uses soap these days? This is definitely a reusable cloth that works very well. It even has a little hanger tag so you can hang it somewhere to dry.
My only criticism is…how annoying is it to clean your whole face with a finger sized cloth? I hope this company also makes tissue size cloths, maybe even towels, from the same material because that would be truly useful. Although in their defence, I don’t think this finger sized cloth is meant for washing your entire face but rather for correcting places were you made a make up mistake. I would truly love a bigger one for face cleaning though. Especially for those days or nights when you just can’t be bothered. Cloth, water, clean, done!
This company won several awards including “Startup of the year 2012”, “Stylish Cosmetic 2013”, “50 Most Creative 2014” and was nominated for “Euro Symbol of Innovation”. SCORE = 9/10.
Scrub Love Hydrating Coconut Oil Body Scrub
I was super excited to get this as I received one in my May Glossybox as well and while I liked the concept and packaging I didn’t really like the scent I got then (was Cucumber and Bamboo but to me it smelled like tea which was not bad just weird for a body scrub). When I tried that one I also noticed that it left behind a “dirty” feeling like something was still there, the skin was not squeaky clean and I felt that I had to soap clean my skin afterwards.
This one was definitely a much better scent for me. Love it actually, it falls into the “I want to eat this” category. I love how raw it looks as if certain natural ingredients were just mixed and that’s it – see picture. It did also feel quite rough on the skin especially on sensitive areas like inner thighs. I didn’t really mind the harshness of it so much though as exfoliation is obviously the purpose here, but by the time I did my whole body it felt uncomfortable on the hands, fairly quickly actually. I think I might use this with a glove next time.
Unfortunately, this scrub also left a “dirty” as in “not squeaky clean” perhaps better described as “oily” feeling. That is the only negative though. If you don’t mind that feeling or if you don’t mind just rinsing with soap or shower gel after then this is the product for you. As I mentioned last time, the packaging although not traditional for a body scrub, is quite nice and attractive. It is water proof and does seal very well after opening or between uses so you don’t have to worry about your scrub getting wet.
The ingredients used, coconut and cranberry give this product a slight cosmeceutical function. This scrub won’t just clear away dead cells but it will also brighten skin due to the vitamin C (see my post on Vitamin C) contained in cranberry and the antioxidants in coconut and cranberry will protect your skin from damage. SCORE = 8/10
Overall I liked the contents of this box and the box design was absolutely gorgeous. A very lovely box to keep for storage or even gifting. The average product score was higher than the first impression score meaning that there were some nice “hidden gems”. This is a very good reason why subscription beauty boxes are amazing at giving you the chance to explore and try different products and brands. I definitely wouldn’t have picked up a water face cleaning cloth before.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) =7.4/10
Star product = Glov Hydro Dermaquillage Cleaning Cloth
