Birchbox July 2017 was all about summer and it had a “sunset inspiring” box design which apparently was the design that won the peoples’ vote a few months ago. Must have been quite a few months ago because I didn’t see any voting or was not invited to any voting poll. Anyhow, the box design is gorgeous and it suits the box drawer.
The products contained this month were quite exciting and there was one more product than usual. This month’s box contained 6 products (although two of them are samples) and they were from left to right as seen in the picture: a hair cream, a skin cleanser, a perfume sample, a lip tint, a concealer pencil and a foot cream. So let’s go in a little more detail as to how each product performed.
Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Percy & Reed Perfectly Perfecting Wonder Overnight Recovery Hair Cream
This is not a very usual product. It is a cream that you are meant to put on dry hair, all over, from roots to ends and leave on overnight while you sleep and shampoo off in the morning. It supposedly nourishes and hydrates your hair while battling brittleness and breakage.
It smells quite pleasantly, like a shampoo, and it looks like one too. This white cream gets absorbed by hair within seconds so you don’t have to worry about messing your pillows. I don’t know if my hair was nourished or less brittle but it did feel nice and soft.
I love the packaging, as always Percy & Reed have a great design. The tube is a standard plastic tube but does the job. I loved this product, one more good hair product from Percy & Reed. I don’t know how often I would use it because I would rather wash my hair in the night which means that I would have to walk around with this on my hair all day. But if you wash your hair in the morning this is the perfect product for you.
I was pleasantly surprised that Birchbox contained a more “posh” brand/product like Percy & Reed and that it is travel size (30mL) not just a small sample. Great job Birchbox more of this please. SCORE = 8/10.
Balanceme Flash Cleanse Micellar Water
This is a very nice cleansing water. I used it on a full make up face and it two cleaning cycles/wipes all of the make up was completely off. No make up traces left. It did not leave any sticky residues or feel weird in any way. The skin was cleansed but still nicely hydrated, not completely dry. This cleanser worked well!
It has a strange but not bad smell. It doesn’t smell like a standard cleanser or cosmetic but it has a typical smell like some of the other Balanceme products and products that claim to be natural. It’s not a bad smell but not a cosmetic/feminine smell either.
The only criticism I have is on the bottle. It is a completely open bottle so you end up using a lot more than you need, but this is a small travel size product so perhaps the full size one is different. I just wish it only had a small hole opening to only get a bit of the liquid out at the time. As annoying as those can be at least you don’t get drenched in cleanser!
This is apparently a 99% natural product free from parabens, clea, mineral ois, sulphates, pegs, petroleum, silicones, propylene, glycol, microbeads, artificial fragrances and colours. It is very clear that this brand is built on the “natural products” theme. It has chamomile and natural peptides which are supposed to boost hydration.
Overall, I liked this cleanser more than I thought I would, I just wish it smelled of something a little more feminine, even if it was just natural rose water! SCORE = 7/10
English Laundry Ofxord Bleu Femme Eau de Parfum
This was the first perfume sample in 5 Birchboxes so I am pleasantly surprised that they are not including them all the time. We all love perfume samples but let’s be honest they are free and should not be taking up a space for a product you payed for. With that being said, Birchbox’s claim that they included one extra item this month is relevant as you can count the perfume sample as “free”.
Nevertheless, I did enjoy this perfume. The smell is not too heavy or too light. I would say its more of a night perfume but it is light enough to wear during the day too. I can’t quite put into words what it smells like exactly because it’s not something specific. It definitely smells very different in the bottle and when you put it on. Both are pleasant smells though. It almost has a fruity hint when in the bottle but not when you put it on. This is a definite feminine scent that smells quite lovely.
In the description it says “This spritz leads with a zesty lemon and mint then dries down to sandalwood and vanilla for a hint of sweetness”. I have to say it didn’t give me lemon or mint or sandalwood maybe a tiny hint of vanilla but anyhow it is definitely a sweet pleasant smell.
I also love the branding. Very simple blue and white but it really works with this perfume. This is also apparently a Birchbox exclusive product. I am glad to have tried this and I might actually even purchase it at some point but it is a free sample not an extra Birchbox product. Come on Birchbox. SCORE = 9/10.
Benefit Chacha lip tint
We were asked to choose this product last month from two different colours the “Gogo tint” and this one the “Chacha tint”. To put it in simple terms, it’s basically pink vs orange tint. When I was choosing my product last month, my phone crashed while I was choosing and so the top or default one was chosen for me which was the “Chacha tint”. I actually wanted the “Gogo tint” so I contacted Birchbox telling them of the accidental pick and asking to change it. They replied pretty quickly but they said they cannot change anything in their programme. I was greatly disappointed with that. You could make a simple change in what colour I chose and if they truly can’t change things like that then they need to revise their automated systems. This is not exactly customer service.
Anyhow, I was slightly dreading getting this one because it was not a colour I wanted. I was also surprised that the sample was so small! Literally sample size not even travel size, only 2.5mL. Nevertheless, I am glad that Birchbox is including Benefit products. They have done it before and I am glad they are still doing so.
The formula is quite watery and it doesn’t really “stick” to the lips. It is streaky and doesn’t apply evenly and it moves around when you pucker your lips. It comes off if you touch them. I am a little disappointed as I expected this to be almost like a liquid lipstick with just less colour intensity but it doesn’t really work well on the lips and it tastes quite bitter!
I also tried it as a cheek stain and that worked so much better. Because it is so watery you can easily work it in your cheeks and create a natural glow. I will definitely use this product until it’s out but as a cheek stain, it really failed badly as a lip stain for me.
The tiny bottle comes with a small brush to apply it with which looks almost like a nail varnish. SCORE = 6/10.
Lord and Berry Conceal it Crayon in Beige
This is according to Birchbox a full size product. This is the same size as travel size pencils so I would disagree with that. It has become a bit of a theme that Birchbox overvalues or oversells the stuff they put inside the box. It’s ok that it is travel size. No need to oversell this. It apparently retails £12 and I have to be honest I wouldn’t pay that for what I think is a travel size pencil. With that being said some brands like for example Bobbi Brown do smaller pencils in general as full size products. So perhaps this is a full size pencil for the brand, just doesn’t look like a full size pencil.
The branding, black pencil with white colours and the font reminded me of Bobbi Brown products and I jumped in my seat a little initially thinking that that’s what it was. They are so so similar, I would go as far as calling them “copy cats”.
On the plus side, this was a good concealer pencil. It is easy to blend in and it works as an under eye concealer (though don’t expect full coverage), as a contour pencil and even as a concealer to hide spots and blemishes without it looking too unnatural. I was pleasantly surprised.
I do like the way it looks but I think it’s a steal from Bobbi Brown. And that’s not so much criticism on whether they actually copied another brand or not but rather more of an observation that it doesn’t have a character/presence of it’s own. I will always think Bobbi Brown when I pick this pencil up or see it in my draw.
This pencil has a subtle cosmetic pencil smell in a pleasant way. SCORE = 7/10
Anatomicals Softening Eucalyptus Foot Cream
I actually really like the way this tube looks. The turquoise tube with yellow cap works well for a foot cream. It stands out and it looks nice.
It is a white standard cream with a eucalyptus smell which I have to say gives it a very relaxing feel. After a nice hot shower in the night, just before you go to bed, this product is everything your feet might want and more. The smell will definitely help you snooze off.
The cream felt nice to apply and it was absorbed pretty quickly. There were no sticky residues left behind. My feet were as soft as a baby’s bum and admittedly I didn’t think that was possible. This cream works and it feels nice too. This will definitely be my go to cream after a long day when my feet are hurting.
The only criticism I have is two statements at the back of this product. One of them says “We only want you for your body”. I mean I see what they did there but I just don’t find it funny or appropriate to tell your customers that and there is also another sentence that says “yes, today people are still walked all over, but at least it’s by those wearing our peace-loving foot cream”. I mean…again I see what they are doing here but really it’s not funny or ok to not condemn such behaviours. It just comes out a little bizarre and unnecessary to have these statements at the back of an otherwise good product.
Strange selling/branding strategy. SCORE = 8/10.
Overall I liked this months Birchbox and I think the box design is gorgeous. The products included were a nice mixture and most of them worked really well. Very well done Birchbox, keep it up!
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.5/10
