Glossybox August 2017 was also a collector’s edition box, like last month, and was dedicated to summer with a specific “girls just wanna have sun” theme. Girls definitely want to have sun!
The box was not the usual pink Glossybox, it actually had a design which was again a lovely surprise. The box was still the same size and type but it was a baby blue colour. Both Glossybox July and August collector’s edition boxes are literally just that, lovely boxes that you are going to want to keep. I love how good quality these boxes and the general Glossyboxes are and it’s nice to mix it up with a bit of a design. I wish Glossybox had a different design every month, and not just for certain limited edition boxes. On the other hand, the fact that they don’t often do design boxes, makes the July and August boxes extra special.
This month there were 5 products included as expected, with one little extra. From left to right as shown in the picture these were: a lipstick pencil, a hair mask, a dry hair shampoo, a setting spray, a bronzer and a little extra, a bracelet. So let’s go in a little more detail as to how each product performed.
Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Rodial Suede Lips
This might look like a lip pencil but it is actually a lipstick pencil. You can of course use it as a pencil to line lips if you wish, but you can also use it on the entire lip as a lipstick.
The colour is a very natural pink-purple that covers the lips nicely and gives them a natural, rather than full on lipstick, effect. It didn’t feel drying or heavy but it did transfer like any other lipstick. It faded much faster than other lipsticks do, pretty much have a drink or eat and it’s gone. I can’t say that the quality is as good as normal lipsticks but the fact that it is fairly subtle and natural means that this could be part of your “natural makeup” options. Remember the colour looks more intense in the swatch picture because it is on my hand, our lips already have a natural colour so when you put this on top there isn’t as much contrast or pigmentation. The not so intense pigmentation will keep it fairly natural looking while covering and evening out any colour imperfections on your lips.
It has vitamin E and is full size. The pencil looks quite sleek and I love that it is mainly a matt black. The outer pencil feels and looks of much higher quality than the actual lipstick inside is. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad but it won’t compare to your normal lipsticks.
This lipstick pencil retails for £22 and it doesn’t smell of anything. I think it is way too pricey for what it is and I personally would rather pay that money for a normal lipstick. I will use this up on my natural makeup days but I won’t be buying. This is one of those products that are not bad but not special either so I will probably even forget this somewhere in my beauty draws. SCORE = 7/10
Valquer Ice Hair Mask Total Repair
A hair mask is a perfect product to find in a summer box, as our hair goes through a lot when it is exposed to the sun and when we sweat all day long!
This hair mask is a pale blue cream that has a conditioner consistency and it smells a little bit like shaving cream. It smells “cooling” and the whole packaging being blue with that drawing pattern gives you the same feeling. It definitely looks like a hair mask product or even an intense conditioner.
The bottle is of good quality and made of sturdy plastic. I love that it is blue, it enhances the cooling smell so much more, but one could also accidentally think that this is a male product.
You are meant to use this instead of a conditioner, so I guess you could call it a conditioner instead of a hair mask. It goes on damp but not soaking wet hair and has to stay for 3 to 5 minutes. I don’t know about you but I hate waiting in the shower for 5 minutes!
Anyhow I somehow found the will to do this and it was quite good. It tamed my hair, made it soft and calm. My hair felt and looked good but it didn’t have the dramatic effect that good hair masks have. It is an intense conditioner in my opinion not a hair mask. I have definitely tried other hair masks before where even my thick unruly hair ended up looking and feeling like I’ve just been out of the hair salon (Redken heatcure at home self-heating mask for example) and this one definitely doesn’t make that much difference.
In my opinion, this is a good intense conditioner that I will use once a week. It has Macademia oil which hydrates and tames hair. SCORE = 7/10
Batiste 2 in 1 Dry Shampoo & Conditioner Vanilla & Passionflower
Well this product doesn’t really need any introductions, I’ve already talked about Batiste dry shampoos before.
These are my go to dry shampoos, they are so much better than a lot of dry shampoos out there and I personally find that the 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner line is better than the normal Batiste dry shampoo line. I have thick unruly hair and if you strip too much of the hair oils out my hair, it pretty much ends up doubling in size and I end up looking crazy. So the 2 in 1 dry shampoo and conditioner keeps them calmer and with less volume. If you struggle with hair volume in general, you might want to go for the normal dry shampoos, but if like me you have thick unruly hair that only needs an excuse to double in volume, then the shampoo and conditioner line will work better for you.
I love the Vanilla and Passionflower smell. It is very nice, pretty and clean. It leaves the hair feeling soft and calm. It doesn’t leave any white residues behind after combing the hair. I usually just spray this on the roots, especially after a gym workout and then comb my hair. You can also work it in if you wish. I find that if I do that my hair picks up volume again.
The outer packaging is made of tin and the cap is plastic. The cap can break easily so it is not the highest quality plastic out there, but at the same time you are only paying £4.49 for a full size of this. I am glad we are even getting a cap! The price is amazing and super affordable. I haven’t tried these for a long time before because I felt that they are so cheap they almost must be bad, but that is not the case. This is definitely one of those “cheap but works” products. If you exercise like me and you get a lot of sweat and grease in your hair, then you will need to go through a lot of these bottles and so you will be thankful for the price!
I like the way the Batiste bottles look in general, they are cute and look like what they are. Hair products. I can’t really praise the Batiste dry shampoos enough. I am sure that if another company wanted to they could also add a few fancy ingredients and make an even better dry shampoo, but this has an excellent price point and it works so I’m not even sure I wouldn’t want anything else.
Sometimes simple works, not all beauty products have to be fancy and do 100 things at once. I am glad that Batiste brought the Shampoo and Conditioner range out because it works even better for me.
I’ve noticed that a lot of the beauty boxes are including Batiste products every now and again. Batiste is doing a great job at getting their products in people’s hands and the beauty box companies are gaining a lot, as these are super cheap and so they probably make a profit! I don’t even mind that I got a super cheap product in my Glossybox this month because it is a product I want and I will use. SCORE = 10/10
SportFX Time Out Face Mist & Fix
I love the idea of a Sports Makeup brand, so I really like what SportFX is trying to do. I personally don’t wear makeup during my workouts because I prefer to workout alone (it is my “me time”) but if you workout around or with others, I totally get why you would want to wear a foundation or BB cream. I get you, I really do.
This is meant to be a setting spray or refreshing mist that, I guess from what the brand stands for, is meant to keep your makeup in place when you are sweating like a pig. I can’t say that this setting spray held my makeup in place any more than my normal Urban Decay setting spray did, but it might be because both my foundation and setting spray are really good to begin with. This spray did the job and it definitely also hydrated my face. A little more than I expected actually.
The first time I tried this I got a bit of a shock. I wasn’t expecting how much spray came out in one pump. The mist created is fine but still “thicker” than other setting sprays I usually use. So be warned you might need to use this from a little further than you normally use your other setting sprays, or you might end up quite wet. If you are using it as a hydrating mist then that’s what you want so fine, but if you are using it as a makeup fix spray you might want to use it from a little further back or you could ruin your make up. This is not an issue, it’s just one of those things that you have to get used to when using this product.
The only negative I noticed on this product is the smell. I can’t really say that it is a bad smell but it is not a nice smell either. I can’t quite define what the smell is like, it is not super strong but it reminds me of cheap, one pound sprays. It is meant to be a menthol smell but I am not sure I am getting exactly that.
The bottle is made of plastic but it is sturdy and of good quality. This small size included here (30mL) is apparently the full size that retails for £5.99. Not a bad price actually. I would otherwise criticise how small the full size is but in this case I think it is perfect. Gym makeup products should be things that you can easily carry with you to the gym or after the gym, so they need to be handbag friendly. There is no reason to carry around a full size, big setting spray, so the size of this one is perfect for what it is meant to be.
This product is also meant to control oil. I didn’t feel that it controlled oil any more than my normal setting spray but it definitely didn’t make anything worse. SCORE = 7/10
ModelLauncher Safari Sun Bronzer
Who doesn’t need a bronzer in the summer months, or even in the winter months to inject some colour back into the face! I was very happy to receive this product but when I first opened this and saw the “leopard” pattern inside, I thought that this would be a super gimmicky product. One of those cheap products that are “wanna be fancy” but are just cheap rubbish. I swatched it first and as you can see in the swatch picture it swatches more like a golden shine than a brown bronzer so I was even more predetermined that this would be bad.
Then I tried it on the face as a bronzer and I was proven completely wrong. It really does look like a nice sun kissed brown bronzer on the face and it is fairly naturally looking if you only put 1-2 layers of it. You can of course build it up if you wish. I can’t believe how different this is on the hand and on the face. Goes to show you that we should always try products out and not just swatch them.
I will definitely use this up and I can’t believe I am saying this, I might buy it when I’m out. This was a full size bronzer that retails for £16.50. I must admit I think the price is a little high but I love the sun kissed colour so much I might pay for it. A lot of bronzers tend to be brown or even orangey brown and it is not every day you find a nice sun kissed, naturally looking bronzer, so this one might be worth it enough for me to buy. Although I have to say, my favourite sun kissed bronzer is still the “Vita Liberata Luxury Tan” that I got in my May Cohorted box. However, that one is a loose powder whereas the one here is a compact powder which is less messy and easier to carry with, so both have their uses.
The bronzer outer box is plastic and very compact. I like that it is black and I even like the huge ML white writing at the front. It doesn’t have a mirror inside and for that price I think it should have. Especially since it is so compact it would be nice to have a mirror to carry around in a handbag.
You don’t need to swirl your brush around the product to get the full colour. I only tapped by brush on top of it 2-3 times and I still got a nice sun kissed colour. So don’t worry about mixing that leopard pattern. It also gives a little natural glow.
I don’t know why I feel so strange saying I like this product. Maybe because it looks so cheap and gimmicky. I would definitely never have guessed the price of this. But it works! SCORE = 8/10
Purelei Aloha bracer
This was a little extra product. It is an elastic bracer made of cloth material. The one I got is baby blue with gold Aloha writing on it. It definitely looks cute.
The fact that it is elastic meaning that it will fit any wrist size tightly. It also came with a discount code, 30% off if you buy from Purelei.
It is a nice, cute, simple, everyday, casual bracelet that you can wear at the beach and as it is made of cloth so you don’t even need to worry if it gets wet.
This bracelet looks quite simple and cheap but actually after having a quick glance at www.Purelei.com this is not representative of their bracelets. They make quite good and expensive looking metallic bracelets as well, but they also have a price tag of £40-50. They definitely look really nice though! Those are not for the beach for sure.
Unfortunately, I have to score the one that was included in the box, not the nice ones on their website, which was very simple and cheap looking. SCORE = 7/10.
Overall, I liked the contents of this box. It is very rare that Glossybox disappoints. The products included did match the theme and the box design was very nice too.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 9/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.7/10
Star product = Batiste 2 in 1 Dry Shampoo & Conditioner Vanilla & Passionflower although I have to give a shout out to the ModelLauncher Safari Sun Bronzer as well.
