The Look Fantastic box is still the first box to arrive every month and it is a huge perk. It always arrives way ahead the Birchbox, Glossybox and Cohorted. Once again, great job Look Fantastic.
Last month it was Look Fantastic’s birthday month and the box was gorgeous but the products contained were even better. Naturally, I was concerned that this month’s box might be a let down. But it wasn’t!
Look Fantastic October carried an Indulge me theme and, well…I am not going to argue with that one! Yes please! The box design is probably one of the prettiest boxes they ever made, in my opinion. It’s not as heavily designed, full of patterns etc as other boxes they did but it is that perfect simple-pretty-elegant design and colour scheme. It’s a very beautiful box and if I could only keep one Look Fantastic box, this is the one I would choose. The pale pink background with the golden pink edges just make this a classic.
The quote inside the box said “Nourish to flourish” and it definitely fits the theme. The products inside also fit the indulge theme so without further ado, let’s get into it!
This month the box contained 6 products and the two monthly magazines that always accompany this box, a small Beauty magazine and a travel size, full version of ELLE magazine. Good value for money as always.
From left to right, the products were: a face scrub, a face oil, a mascara, a concealer, hand mask gloves and a body scrub.
Let’s dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!
Lancer The Method Polish
This came in its original outer packaging and I love that. According to the Beauty magazine that came with this box, this is one of Victoria Beckham’s go to products. I have tried other products before that they were allegedly Victoria Beckham’s favourites and I have to admit I was not disappointed at all. If this is true, the lady definitely has some good taste!
This was an amazing scrub. It’s a white gel with small white “scrub balls” that do not dissolve in water. So not very environmentally friendly. The scrub smells like menthol (=nose opening smell, like Vicks) and it is nicely awakening and soothing.
It feels quite harsh on the skin, the balls feel fairly rough but after you endured that your skin will be left baby soft and smooth. This scrub really works. I loved it!
The tube is just standard, nothing too special or expensive. However, the colour design, blue tube with silver lid and writing does give this product an expensive look to it. The tube is not overly designed, it’s fairly simple and there is an elegance to that. It’s definitely a nice tube to have in your bathroom.
The ingredients are also great, there are some good skin nourishing compounds in there. There’s also some compounds that are known to cause sensitisation, like linalool, so if you have sensitive skin try a small amount first, maybe on your hand.
I will definitely be purchasing this. SCORE = 10/10.
Monu Skincare Firming Fiji Facial Oil
I have already tried this product in Glossybox August. It’s become quite common these days to find the same products in other beauty boxes so I am definitely glad that some of them are going down the “exclusive routes”. This product is a good example of why Look Fantastic falls short sometimes, for not having a personal beauty profile like other beauty boxes do.
As I have oily skin, I am a little disappointed to receive this product. Don’t get me wrong, I moisturise day and night but for my oily skin, oils really don’t work. I have to use gels or gel-creams, as oils tend to just sit on my skin and not get absorbed, ending up even more oily than normal. This is a product for dry skin, it even says so on the bottle.
This oil is a clear, pale yellow liquid that has a smell somewhere between something floral and a nail varnish. It of course leaves an oily residue and oily shine behind as it does not get fully absorbed by my skin at least. This is a firming facial oil for dry and sensitive skin that contains grape seed oil, apricot kernel oil, hazel seed oil, rosewood oil and other oils and ingredients. I am actually surprised that this is marketed for sensitive skin as it also contains linalool and limonene which are mainly used as fragrance compounds and are known sensitizers. This doesn’t mean that this product will cause you sensitisation but usually as it seems rational, companies avoid known sensitizers from sensitive skin products.
The bottle is plastic but the walls are fairly thin. You can easily squeeze the bottle but at the same time I doubt it would break. The branding is very simple at the same time it does look like a skin care or even hair care product so it is about right.
I don’t have sensitive skin, but I do have oily skin, and as I said this doesn’t work for me. I know it’s a facial oil but I might use it on my legs as they tend to get dry in winter. SCORE = 6/10
Ciaté Wonderwand Mascara
When I first saw this mascara I thought it might be some kind of Christmas holiday version and since it is only October I wasn’t pleased! I was wrong though, this has nothing to do with Christmas, the stars and silver colour scheme are just the typical Ciaté branding.
This mascara is meant to have a wonderwand. I don’t know if I would go as far as calling it a wonderwand but it is definitely a very nice, thick, functional wand. On the other hand, the mascara formulation didn’t seem to match the wonderwand. It definitely made my lashes longer, quite a lot longer, but not thicker at all. I can see this being a nice look in specific occasions where you want to have longer but thin looking lashes but it will be a very specific time. For the rest of 99% of looks, I want my lashes to also be thicker, even though I already have thick lashes, so this is not a mascara I am excited about.
The lashes also started sticking to each other so the whole long and thin look didn’t even work out the way I’d want it to.
It’s a pretty product on the outside, like all Ciaté products, but the whole this is Christmas look and the thin but sticky eye lashes really didn’t do it for me. The fact that the colour is also called “Black Magic” doesn’t sit well either and it is all a shame because the wand is actually nice. I will be sticking with the Too Faced Better than Sex mascara for sure.
The mascara lasts a few hours but not all day and it has a cosmetic type of smell. SCORE = 6/10
ModelCo Instant Radiance Concealer
This is a Look Fantastic exclusive! It is a concealer pen with a mechanism that you have to turn at the top in order to get the product out. As it goes with these concealers, you end up turning the top many times, because nothing is coming out, and then all of the sudden you have enough concealer to cover your entire face. I can’t say that this pen type mechanism is my favourite. I think I probably wasted half of it!
The actual pen is very simple looking, just plain black with the ModelCo branding and Instant Radiance writing on the other side. I don’t mind the simplicity, it works for this product. At the same time though, it doesn’t feel or look particularly expensive.
What I like the most about this product is that the actual concealer smells like baby powder combined with a cosmetic smell. I really loved the smell! On the other hand, the pen doesn’t say on it what colour it is and so I can only assume that this is a one colour product. This means that it will definitely not fit all skin shades and tones which is not great.
The brush bristles are soft and it did brighten up my eye but not anymore than any other concealer. That is what concealers do anyways! I didn’t notice any extra radiance as the product suggests. Unless the instant radiance bit written on the pen just means it’s a concealer?
Anyhow, the colour did match my skin tone but I am fairly light so this definitely won’t fit all. The product never dried, so every time I touched my under eyes I would get lots of product off on my fingers. You have to set this with powder for sure. I personally avoid setting my concealer because that usually adds texture to my face and makes me eyes look heavy and so this concealer really doesn’t work for me. SCORE = 5/10
Skimono Beauty Hand Mask
Hand masks are slowly but surely becoming a beauty must. If you think about it, our hands are the skin that we use the most, to do any activity must be done, so why are we not taking extra good care of them? Hands are also one of the tell signs of ageing so even if you hand skin is perfect, there is still reason to take care of it and give it some love.
These hand masks are like gloves that you place your hands in and wait 20-30 minutes. The gloves have two layers, an outer plastic layer and an inner cloth type layer that is soaked with all the good for your skin ingredients. As soon as you put your hand in, it will get wet and the glove will stick to your skin.
The gloves are fairly large so they would almost definitely fit all. Once your skin gets wet and the glove sticks to your hand, the gloves won’t feel as huge anymore which makes them a little more comfortable.
I did get annoyed quite quickly with them because as your skin gets wet it becomes wrinkly, warm and sweaty and you start feeling like you want to take them off. However, if you last those 20-30 minutes it will be worth it, as your skin will be super wrinkly but eventually soft and renewed. I just had a fresh nail varnish done, 10 minutes before using these, and it was still intact afterwards. Extra points there.
These hand masks contain shea butter, Alo Vera, hyaluronic acid and other normal skin conditioners.
The only question is, why the hand mask? The ingredients contained can easily be found in good hand creams so why do we need to spare those 20-30 minutes? What makes this mask extra special?
Before I get all sciency, there is evidence of some ingredients being absorbed better through inclusion (wrapping up your skin with something) so that might be one reason. But even if there is nothing that special about this, it was a pleasurable and fun thing to try and my dry hands were deeply moisturised. SCORE = 8/10
Bean Body Coffee and Coconut Body Scrub
I have accumulated so many scrubs from beauty boxes, I have officially opened a scrub bar! They are useful products though that tend to run out quickly, so the more the merrier!
The outer packaging is just a standard thick, plastic, resealable bag that is waterproof so you don’t have to worry about your scrub getting wet. The scrub is a thick brown powder that looks like coffee and smells like coffee with coconut.
Your skin will end up brown while you smear yourself in this scrub, not a great look but it will afterwards be nice, smooth and soft. Like many other scrubs out there, this scrub leaves an oily residue behind which might be beneficial if you have dry skin but annoying if you don’t. You can easily wash off the oily residue though with a little shower gel. Your skin will smell like coconut and coffee so perhaps don’t use this right before bed time!
It is a good body scrub with very simple but effective ingredients. It contains hyaluronic acid, beneficial oils and vitamins. The coffee smell might be all you need in your morning shower! SCORE = 9/10
Overall, I really love this month’s box design but while I was intrigued and interested to try out all the products contained, some were hits and others were definite misses.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.3/10
