This months Birchbox had a “Vogue” theme and the products contained were selected from the Vogue 100 Hall of Fame. I have to say, this is one of the best themes Birchbox ever did! Love the theme, love that the products have been selected by Vogue and I even love the box design.
Birchbox VIPs had a choice between two Vogue box designs. I went for the pink with gold Vogue letters because…well just look at it, it’s gorgeous. The box was still the typical Birchbox drawer box of the same quality as usual.
The box also came with a Vogue voucher that would give 6 Vogue issues for free, if you subscribe for 1 year or more. So essentially, it is a 50% discount if you subscribe for a year.
It contained 5 products and they were from left to right as seen in the picture: a hair styling product, a fake tan product, a brush cleaner, a bronzer and a nail varnish top coat.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Percy and Reed Smoothed Sealed and Sensational Volumizing No Oil Oil
Percy and Reed hair products are of high quality and this one is not an exception. This is no oil, oil product adds volume to your hair. It is best used after towel drying your hair but I used it whenever I felt I needed some volume.
It smells really nice, a combination of a hair cosmetic and a fabric conditioner. It is a very pleasant scent. The actual product is a colourless, slightly thick, liquid that spreads on the hair nicely through the pump. You might need to work it in a little but it will definitely give you some volume.
The bottle is plastic and even though it is obviously a sample, it is still cute and practical.
The oil contains pro-vitamin B5 to nourish the hair but the rest of the ingredients are very standard for hair conditioning. It’s not the most nourishing hair product out there, but that’s ok as this is a styling product. SCORE = 8/10
James Read Gradual Tan Sleep Mask Tan Face
If you are into fake tanning, you should definitely try the James Read products. So far the ones I tried have been very good but if I’m honest I didn’t try this one.
This is a fake tan for the face and I personally prefer my face to be bright and lighter skin toned, so I never tan my face. If my body is tanned, I usually just up my foundation by a shade or two. I am always honest in my reviews and since I’ve never tried this, I cannot comment on this product. Sorry guys!
Birchbox Blush Cleaner
Well I can’t imagine this being in the Vogue hall of fame. This must be a Birchbox cheeky addition. Nevertheless, it is a useful one.
This is a silicone brush cleaner where you can swirl your brushes against, to make cleaning them easier, faster and more efficient. It is very practical and easy to use. You can hold it by placing 1-2 fingers inside. Then soap your brushes and swirl them against its ridges.
Brush cleaning eggs last for ages but remember to replace them every now and again as their material can host bacteria.
I like that Birchbox placed their logo on it. It makes it a little more personal and special. It is a little less sturdy than other cleaning eggs I’ve tried but that’s probably because of its shape. SCORE = 9/10
Benefit Hoola Bronzer
This definitely belongs in the Vogue Hall of Fame. It is an amazing bronzer…does it even need introduction?
Love that Birchbox included this and even though it’s only a small sample size it is still very cute. It’s a small plastic, click on packaging that has the Benefit Hoola Bronzer design at the front. The word HOOLA is even marked on the actual bronzer itself.
I love the tone of the brown colour and I use it as a bronzer, and contour sometimes if I’m honest. In fact, I even use a little on the eyes to give some warmth when I am sporting the “no makeup-makeup” looks.
I love that it is so versatile and you can use it in so many ways. If you never tried this bronzer it is definitely worth a try. SCORE = 10/10
Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat
Well who doesn’t need top coats? I don’t know about you but for me, the first nail varnish product that I usually run out of is the top coat. The colours might change, the base might change but a good top coat is a good top coat.
This one is definitely that. It dries fast, gives a nice glossy finish and lasts for days.
It lasted me about 3 days before my nail varnish started chipping and although that might not sound like long, it is. Normal nail varnish products usually last me 1-2 days before the first chip and only high quality brands like OPI last me that extra day. This one is definitely in that category together with the OPI longevity.
It of course smells strongly like nail varnish and the bottle and brush are of standard quality. The design of the bottle is even a little on the ugly side. But who cares, for me if a product works well that’s a lot more important. SCORE = 9/10
Overall, I cannot believe that I only had positive things to say about all the products contained. This has definitely been a very successful box but of course, I wouldn’t expect less from Vogue. I loved this theme and I hope Birchbox does it again! There’s still another 95 Vogue Hall of Fame products we haven’t tried yet…
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 9/10
Star product = Benefit Hoola Bronzer
