Look Fantastic Beauty Box January 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Finally, the first Look Fantastic box of 2018! I say finally because during 2017 the Look Fantastic box was usually the one to arrive first (out of Cohorted, Glossybox, Birchbox), most of the time days before the others, whereas this month it was actually the last! Technically speaking, it doesn’t really matter when a box arrives, as long as its not in the latter half of the month, but nevertheless I hope that Look Fantastic can keep its “first to deliver” reputation through this year too. It just adds brownie points.

This month the Look Fantastic box looked a little different. It was actually fairly obvious, as soon as I opened it I got a sense of change. It just has a renewed look to it. Perhaps it was the simple blue and green colours of the box that gave me the “new” and “organised” feeling but apparently, according to the magazine that comes with it, it wasn’t just a feeling, they are actually giving it a renewed look.

Even the small beauty magazine that the Look Fantastic comes with every month had a slightly different shape, layout and content to it. Somewhere in the magazine they stated that this is the “New Look for 2018”. I love what I see so far and I am glad they are improving, not just because it’s always good to improve, but mainly because during 2017 my Look Fantastic boxes scored on average the same as the Birchbox ones, which I though was a big let down for Look Fantastic, as they put more effort visually and physically with the products contained.

If you missed that post, for all the details on how Cohorted, Glossybox, Look Fantastic and Birchbox performed in 2017 and which one is worth your money, check out “Battle of the Beauty Boxes – Conclusions from the 2017 unboxing and reviews on Cohorted, Glossybox, Look Fantastic and Birchbox!

Inside the Look Fantastic monthly beauty magazine you can usually find short explanations on the products contained as well some information on how to use them and other advertising products.

Look Fantastic January 2018 was all about starting the year fresh and so it was a heavy skin care box. If you read my Glossybox January 2018 and Birchbox January 2018, that is exactly what I though would fit best for January! Look Fantastic hit it right on the spot with this theme. Amazing start to the year.

I have to say I love this new look. It is very sleek and the theme is on point. I love the colours of the box and I love the high quality cardboard that the box is made off. The Look Fantastic boxes have always been by far the prettiest and most high quality boxes (out of Cohorted, Glossybox, Birchbox).

Also, let’s not forget that the Look Fantastic beauty box always comes with a travel size (but full version) of the ELLE magazine. All for the same price as Glossybox and Birchbox (within a few pence to a pound). What a good value for money! If you like ELLE, don’t subscribe to it, subscribe to the beauty box. Two birds, one stone!

As always, the box contained a quote, under the lid, which said “Ataraxia (a Greek word) – A state of serene calmness, ongoing freedom from worry”. I think winter months, especially January, the start to a new year should be all about finding relaxation and calmness and this skincare box really suits that state of mind. It’s a bit of a strange quote but nevertheless it suits the box and the month. The box may have been a little late this month but it has been spot on. If that’s the trade off, then please Look Fantastic take your time next month too!

The box contained 6 products this month. From left to right, the products were: a lash primer, a bath oil, a scalp treatment, a face cleanser, a lotion and a skin serum for blemishes.

Let’s dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and as beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!

ModelCo 3D Lash Primer

I actually also received this in Glossybox December 2017. It’s very common for different beauty boxes to contain the same items every now and again, especially within the same month or similar time frame, 1-2 months difference. There are some brands that tend to come up more often than others, like Monu, Balanceme, Modelco, Figs & Rouge, Pixi by Petra, Polaar etc. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, you can always have a backup product or give it away. It does give a good image towards the company as well as it seems like they are putting effort in getting their products out there. Perhaps it is bad if you think that no beauty box has “exclusivity” on the product or brand but honestly, who cares? This would only make a difference in the long term, if a beauty box had a lot of brand or high quality product exclusives that made people subscribe to it, but that is very difficult to do.

Anyhow, back to the lash primer. The packaging looks very simple but feels sleek. The wand is nicely thick and covered in enough product.

The primer is actually a white cream and it truly does make your lashes longer. You can actually see lots of little fibres growing on the wand, so it is almost visually obvious that it works.

It lasts long, as long as you pick a good mascara, you will be set for the day. It might make your lashes slightly sticky, so you might need to practice how much of the product you need to use to avoid the stickiness.

I was pleasantly surprised with this primer. This is a full size lash primer that retails for £7, a good price indeed. SCORE = 8/10

Monuspa Warming Ginger bath and body oil

This is a two in one, bath and body oil that you can use in multiple ways. You can add a few drops in a bath, apply directly onto your body after a shower and apparently you can use this even after a heavy gym session, to soothe tight muscles.

Monuspa Warming Ginger bath and body oil_20180121025134415

The bottle is simple bearing the typical Monu branding. Although it’s not of bad quality, it is easily squashable. The oil itself has a light yellow colour to it and even though it is fairly thin in consistency, it still feels oily. It gets absorbed by the skin quickly but it still leaves a slightly oily feel behind. Although I must say, this heavily depends on how dry your skin is. The drier parts of my skin absorbed this like there is no tomorrow and in those cases it left no oil traces whatsoever. It does depend on how dry your skin is, how much of this your skin actually wants.

It smells faintly of ginger, lemongrass and orange which results in an “awakening” type of scent. This product is definitely more appropriate for use in the morning although I can’t imagine many occasions where one would take a bath then. This product then is more for a body oil use.

The bottle wasn’t entire full, I’d say it was about ¾ full, which is slightly disappointing. Even if it is brand new it still gives you the sense that someone might have touched it. There was no seal on this product to give that reassurance.

There are some interesting ingredients in this oil which is apparently suitable for all skin types. It is paraben free, has not been tested on animals and lasts 12M. SCORE = 8/10

Espa Pink hair and scalp mud

This is a hair and scalp mud intensive treatment that conditions and nourishes. It has a pinky-red colour, hence why it’s called pink hair mud, which is mostly due to the red clay it contains. It also contains vitamin C and apricot kernel oil.

It is suitable for all hair types, especially dry or weak hair. You can massage it into damp hair and scalp and leave for 20 minutes or alternatively, for a more intense treatment, you can leave it in hair overnight.

It has a very subtle, sweet cosmetic scent. The tube is very sturdy and of good quality and the branding although minimal, looks sleek and professional.

I can’t say that I noticed a huge difference after using this but at the same time its claims, “condition and nourish”, are very difficult to see. It might well be that it conditioned and nourished, it’s very difficult to look for evidence for such claims without proper laboratory analysis. It felt nice and if nothing else, it offers a great opportunity to massage the scalp.

This scalp mud lasts 12M. SCORE = 7/10

Korres White tea fluid gel face cleanser

One more Korres product. It seems that Look Fantastic might have a deal with them which is actually great. Its nice to be able to try a couple of products from the same brand so you can get a more overall idea of whether that is a brand for you or not. It also means that there is less chance you will get doubles as the box should be tracking what it has included in the months before.

Korres White tea fluid gel face cleanser_20180121024729029

This time the Korres product included was a face cleanser that contains white tea extract, a natural anti-oxidant and skin toner. It is meant to be used as a normal face cleanser and is suitable for all skin types.

The tube is of good quality and the branding is actually a little simpler and sleeker than the other Korres products I’ve seen. They don’t all seem to look very similar, which doesn’t give the brand an immediate recognition point, but I actually like this simpler look. The simplicity and colour scheme really suits the white tea selling point here.

The tube came with a seal which is great. The product is a colourless, silky feeling gel that has a very subtle but pleasantly refreshing scent and feels really nice on the skin. It took a couple of washing cycles to wash out a full face of makeup but that is the case with many face cleansers anyways. It left my oily skin nicely balanced, neither dry or oily.

It is suitable for all skin types and is made of 88.3% natural ingredients. It is dermatologically and ophthalmologist tested. It lasts 6M and although it might not sound like a lot, you will use it much faster than that. SCORE = 7/10

Erno Lazlo Toner Light Controlling Lotion

This cute little bottle is a toner that gently exfoliates to remove dead skin cells while at the same time soothing and calming irritations.

There were three options for this product this month. Other Look Fantastic boxes may have included the hydraphel skin supplement which hydrates and soothes dry, sensitive and mature skin, while reinforcing its defences.

Alternatively, the third option was the white marble essence lotion for dark spots, dull and hyperpigmented skin which helps brighten and even out skin tone, while also repairing and renewing the skin.

Although Look Fantastic does not offer a personal beauty profile (unlike Glossybox and Birchbox), where you can tell them what type of skin or concerns you have etc, it has miraculously included the one I would mostly be interested in. The light controlling lotion is suitable for acne, oily skin and enlarged pores and as I’m sure you know by now, I have oily skin and pores the size of craters. Although I must say, the alternative use of the Dr Botanicals Moroccan Rose Superfood Facial Oil and the Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum have really helped decrease their size significantly. So perhaps the term crater might not be appropriate for my pores anymore! Little valleys instead.

Anyhow, this toner smells lovely. It has a sweet cosmetic powder type scent and it feels nice on the skin. It gets absorbed in no time and leaves no residues behind. I can’t really say that I’ve noticed any differences on my pores from this one but to be fair, I think the amount I received is nowhere near enough for proper testing or conclusions.

The tiny plastic bottle looks really cute but it only contained about 1/3 of the bottle’s size (see level line on the picture below), which wasn’t really enough, especially for a product like a toner where you end up using a fair bit. Not only does it look strange, why is the bottle not full, it also wasn’t really enough to create a full opinion. There are sometimes in life where the glass is more than half empty and it’s not great!

Erno Lazlo Toner Light Controlling Lotion 2_20180121024628118

You can use this as any normal toner on a clean face, by either patting onto the skin with your fingers or using a cotton pad.

Look Fantastic claims that all three toners are suitable for all skin types and so they claim that there is no problem in terms of which one you receive in your box.  They might be suitable for all skin types but they serve different purposes and if that purpose is not something you “suffer” from, like oily skin for example, it does make the toner slightly useless. I was lucky this time but this is a good example of where a beauty profile would maximise product efficiency and reduce customer disappointment. I mean, if I received the dark spots one for example, I’d be pretty disappointed as I don’t have any! I could still use the toner but I wouldn’t be using it at its full purpose.

This product lasts for 12M. This tiny 1/3 filled bottle will last you a couple of uses at best. As I wasn’t able to get a full picture out of testing this, this is an approximation/expectation score. SCORE = 7/10

Balanceme Congested Skin Serum

Just when I though I’ve tried all of the Balanceme products out there, here comes another one. I must admit I’m not the biggest Balanceme fan, based only on the scent, as I don’t like the all natural, slightly off scents that these products tend to have.

This one smelled better, a bit like lemon meets eucalyptus, and it has a balance of an awakening and calming scent. It’s not exactly that cosmetic feminine sweet scent that I love but it wasn’t as bad as other Balanceme products.

Balanceme Congested Skin Serum_20180121024607458

Anyhow this product was actually an interesting one as it is meant to help your skin look flawless by getting rid of imperfections, keeping it hydrated and glowy. It has anti-bacterial and anti-microbial ingredients (kanuka oil) and it also contains ingredients that can help reduce redness and inflammations (eucalyptus).

You can use it on clean skin as skincare or even as a primer. I can’t say this is the best  primer for oily skin but it does work. It gets absorbed easily but it leaves a slightly oily residue behind.

The tube is of standard quality and the branding is typical of Balanceme. I like that Balanceme products have a very cohesive look and identity and you immediately know when you look at them that they are from that brand.

As all Balanceme products, this one is 99% natural and it contains a huge list of ingredients, many of which are actually quite interesting. It did help with redness and spots/blemishes but don’t expect an instant or overnight disappearing act.

It’s definitely a product worth having in your collection for those annoying times when spots seem to flare up! SCORE = 8/10

Look Fantastic January 2018 8_20180121025006816

Overall, I loved the simplicity and the colours of the box design and the fact that they are giving the box a refreshed and refined look. I think the new booklet is much better and more informative and the theme was spot on. A heavy skincare box is exactly what is needed to kick start the new year!

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 9/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.5/10

Star product = A couple of products scored an 8 this month but I will give it to the product that pleasantly surprised me the most, the Monuspa Warming Ginger bath and body oil.
