Battle of the top 2 concealers – Urban Decay Naked Skin vs Tarte Shape Tape – A chemist’s verdict and ingredient analysis

As you age, work late, or in general get tired, a concealer will become a very important part of your makeup, arguably even more important than foundation. That is because a good concealer can make your eyes appear less tired and younger. A bad concealer on the other hand, can aggregate into the natural creases of the eye, or as you age, into your wrinkles, and make your eyes appear even more tired and older than you actually are. It goes without saying, no one wants that!

I’ve tried multiple concealers in my crusade to find the perfect one, as I am now in my 30s. I don’t sleep as much as I should over the week and I have 2 natural lines under my eyes which concealers tend to clump up and exaggerate even more. I’ve tried the baking method, it always made those lines even more exaggerated and my eyes more textured and tired.

As a result, for me the perfect concealer has always been the Urban Decay Naked Skin because it is thin but at the same time full coverage, it dries on it’s own so doesn’t need setting and when it’s fresh, it doesn’t emphasise my under eye lines as much.

In a previous post I did a direct comparison of the Urban Decay concealers, Naked Skin vs All Nighter and found that the Naked Skin was by far the best. This has been the case for all concealers I have come across so far until now!

Many beauty bloggers around the world seem to agree with the Naked Skin being the world’s top concealer until Tarte released their Shape Tape concealer and stole some people away from Urban Decay. I have been dying to try this concealer but Tarte has an almost non-existent presence in the UK and I haven’t been able to get my hands on it. I’ve now managed to get it, so let the battle of the world’s top 2 concealers begin!

Battle of concealers UD vs Tarte 2_20180401220944653

Which concealer is best? Are they different? And more importantly, which one is worth your time and money?

Here’s my chemist’s verdict:

Packaging:

The outter packaging that the concelers come in are fairly similar and very simple in design and branding so let’s move on to the actual concealer tubes.

The Urban Decay Naked Skin comes in a typical thin concealer tube of high quality and it overall looks fairly simple but elegant. It is mostly transparent with a silver lid. The Tarte Shape tape is also transparent and of high quality with the different being that the lid is gold with some triangular purple design. The Tarte tube though is slightly taller and much thicker. It is quite chunky and not the most convenient to carry around.

However, it actually contains twice as much concealer, 10mL as opposed to the 5mL in the Urban Decay one.

Winner: Equal. They both have their perks. They both look nice and although I think the Tarte stands out more and contains double the amount, the Urban Decay is more elegant.

The wand:

The two concealers have very different wands.

The Urban Decay wand is different than many concealers. It is double sided and flat on both sides which means you could use one side for one eye and the other side for the remaining eye. Might not sound that fancy but it means that you only don’t need to deep in the concealer to cover both eyes. It’s fast, easy and practical.

The Tarte wand on the other hand, is very intimidating. It is as chunky as the tube which I guess makes sense otherwise it would look strange. However, it is huge and it’s not exactly what you have in mind when you are thinking of thin delicate skin under your eyes. It has the typical concealer wand or lipstick wand shape which definely works well but means you might need to go in twice, once for each eye. On the other hand, the humongous size of the wand also means that it probably carries more concealer on it which might be enough to dot both eyes.

Winner: The Urban Decay Naked Skin wand is less intimidating, easier to work with and more practical.

Coverage:

Both concealers offer full coverage but at the same time both concealers feel fairly thin on the skin. If I had to be super picky I’d say that the Tarte perhaps offers a little more coverage but we are talking super tiny amounts.

Both concealers offer as much coverage as you will ever need from a concealer. If you find that your eyes are still dark after using these two concealers it means that you should probably colour correct before using them.

Winner: Equal. Both are full coverage.

Colour and shade availability:

Both concealers come in 14 shades so they are equal on that front. However, they are definetely not equal in terms of availability.

The Urban Decay concealers are very easy to get and can be found in many beauty shops in the UK and also online. Tarte on the other hand, has been an absolute pain to get my hands on to here in the UK. They have no shop presence and if you buy them from online you will need to pay shipping and possibly even duty for shipping to the UK.

It also means that you have to make a desicision on the internet as to which colour to get since you can’t walk to a beauty counter and try them on your skin. Overall, Tarte, not great!

In case this is helpful for all of you trying to figure out your colour, I use the Urban Decay Naked Skin Light Warm colour which I couldn’t exactly match in Tarte so I mix the Tarte Shape tape Fair Neutral and Light Neutral. This might sound like an absolute pain but actually it isn’t, I just make 4 dots under the eye with Fair neutral and then add 3 between with Light Neutral. The colous effortlessly mix as you work the concealer in with a beauty sponge, no need to pre-mix them at the back of your hand or on a palette.

Winner: The Urban Decay definetely wins this one as it is much more accessible and easier to get than Tarte.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 0

Texture:

Both concealers feel very light and natural on the skin. Both of them look like “perfect” skin and none of them adds any texture.

However, as the Urban Decay concealer ages, as the tube is open for longer, it tends to emphasise or site around lines much more. I tend to not get any creasing the first few days of opening a new Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer tube and then after a week or so I start getting creasing in my two under eye lines.

The Tarte Shape Tape concealer on the other hand, goes inside the under eye lines and fills them in so much so that they look almost erased. This gives the eyes a much more youthful appearance even though both concealers give an overal youthfull texture.

Winner: Both concealers give a youthful, natural skin texture but the Tarte Shape Tape concealer works with lines not against, fills them in and almost erases them.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 1

Blendability:

Both are very easy to blend with a beauty sponge.

Winner: Equal.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 1

Longevity:

The Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer lasts all day long and looks flawless and featherlike with the only exception being the emphasising of any lines around the eyes. Additionally, if your eyes water in the morning or you tear up for whatever reason, it comes off pretty easily leaving you with an eye that has a differently coloured inner corner. Not great!

The Tarte Shape Tape also lasts all day and looks flawless and featherlike but also doesn’t come off if you tear up. Touching your inner corner eye will not take it off and so you don’t run the risk of a differently coloured inner eye corner!

In terms of how long the concealers last unopened in their tube, the Urban Decay lasts 9M wheres the Tarte lasts 6M. Both last more than enough time and I’m not sure that the additional 3M of the Urban Decay offer much benefit. If you haven’t touched a makeup item in the last 6 months, it is highly likely you will never do so.

Winner: The Tarte Shape Tape is more resiliant and doesn’t come off as easily. Both last all day though.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 2

SPF protection:

None of these concealers containt SPF but that’s ok it is very rare for a concealer to do so.

Winner: Equal.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 2

Skin compatibility:

Neither concealer is marketed for a specific skin type so I would assume that they are compatible with all skin types.

Winner: Equal.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 2

Transfer proof tests:

Both concealers dry on their own and do not come off if touched. However, as mentioned above, the Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer comes off if you tear up whereas the Tarte Shape Tape stays put!

Winner: Both are transfer proof but the Tarte Shape Tape appears to also be waterproof to an extent.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 3

Smell:

The Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer has a medium strength smell of makeup and solvent. It is not as bad as you might think, I personally don’t find it that negative but it is nevertheless not exactly a feminine scent either.

The Tarte concealer has a very faint smell that you will only capture if you literally put the wand as close to your nose as possible. It is a floral, sweet type of smell and even though it is very pleasant, you will likely not smell it when you use it.

Winner: The Tarte scent, even though very faint, is definetely more pleasant. Even if you don’t smell it, I think that the “odour less” scent would be preferred by many than the makeup/solvent scent of the Urban Decay one.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 4

Price:

The Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer retails for £19.50. The Tarte Shape Tape on the other hand, retails for £22 +shipping since it’s not available in UK shops. However, the Tarte Shape Tape is still cheaper as it contains twice the amount (10mL vs 5mL).

Winner: The Tarte Shape Tape is cheaper per mL.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 2 vs Tarte Shape Tape 5

Ingredients:

The two concealers are actually fairly different. The Naked Skin concealer contains 27 ingredients whereas the All Nighter contains 39. However, more doesn’t mean better, it’s the amount of each ingredient (which we don’t know) and the function that each compound brings that matter.

I won’t go through every single ingredient here as most of them are just there for functional formulation reasons. There are some however, that can also provide a “skin nutritional” value and some that you might choose to avoid, so here’s the summary:

The Naked Skin concealer contains 19 ingredient positives vs 23 in the Shape Tape. However, the real difference is not really in the number but on the actual ingredients contained. The Naked Skin concealer has some amazing ingredient heroes that will nourish the skin deeply and even offer serious anti-flammatory and anti-ageing effects such as vitamins C and Ehyaluronic acid and some peptides (see list below). The Shape Tapealso has many ingredient positives like vitamine E, anti-oxidants and some nice plant extracts. However, I feel that the Naked Skin one has better ingredients, more ingredient heros that are more important or valuable if you like.

Unfortunately though, since we don’t know the exact amount of each ingredient contained it means that even though there are some amazing ingredients in both concealers, the amount of them might be too small to matter. As a result, overall I think that your skin would benefit from both concealers almost equally. Credit to Urban Decay though for including hyaluronic acid and peptides, they really elevate the concealer to another level.

The Shape Tape has 3 more ingredient negatives (5 vs 2) and has 12 ingredients that could potentially cause sensitisation or irritation. The Naked Skin concealer contains 2 ingredient negatives and 3 potential irritants. However, none of these, in any of the concealers are that bad and are definitely not show stoppers. It is also natural for the Shape Tape to contain more negatives and irritants since it contains a lot more ingredients to begin with.

Winner: It’s really difficult to choose as both contain nice ingredients. I think overall, taking both positives and negatives into consideration I would give the edge to the ingredients in the Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer.

Urban Decay Naked Skin 3 vs Tarte Shape Tape 5

Here’s the detailed breakdown:

Ingredient positives – Naked Skin concealer:

  1. Cyclopentasiloxane based formulation – Temporarily fills in wrinkles or crease lines to give a more “plump” look. It enhances fluidity, making the formulation more silky spreadable and it can also “lock in” water by forming a “protective barrier” on the skin (=humectant).
  2. Butylene Glycol – A humectant that can preserve water and a skin conditioner.
  3. Silica – Anti-caking and can improve the product’s spread ability. Silica is safe and only becomes a health hazard when in its free powder form.
  4. Cyclohexasiloxane – A skin conditioner that gives the product fluidity and spreadability.
  5. Glycerin – A skin conditioner and humectant.
  6. Litchi Chinensis Pericarp Extract – A skin conditioning agent and anti-oxidant. It is said to inhibit the degradation of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, giving it anti-ageing properties. Some reported that it can enhance the skin’s complexion.
  7. Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone: Polymer – A skin conditioner that gives a smooth and soft look and eliminates tackiness.
  8. Dimethicone – A skin conditioner, humectant and can even temporarily fill in wrinkles and lines. Can also soothe the skin and reduce redness.
  9. Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract – A skin conditioner, powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. May protect against free radicals, prevent sun damage and preserve the natural moisture barrier of the skin.
  10. Caprylyl Glycol – A skin conditioner and anti-microbial agent. Also a good moisturiser.
  11. Trimethylsiloxysilicate – A mild adhesive that makes things stick to the skin. A humectant that can enhance the product’s spreadability and give some shine to the skin.
  12. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate – A hero compound, stable form of vitamin C that can stimulate production of moisturising compounds in the skin. A good anti-oxidant molecule that can increase collagen production, keeping the skin healthy and younger looking, reduce melanin production, giving a brighter skin appearance and can even repair the effects of UV-exposure.
  13. Tocopheryl Acetate – A hero compound, more stable form of vitamin E. A good anti-oxidant and conditioning agent that can also moisturise and help with inflammation.
  14. Polysorbate 20 – Can lubricate and sooth the skin.
  15. Sodium Hyaluronate – A hero compound, known as the “fountain of youth”molecule. Plays a major role in anti-ageing processes and is found in embryos in high concentrations. Can hold onto water 1000 times of its weight meaning that it is an amazing moisturiser by locking moisture in. Helps wounds and burns heal and it’s linked to increased collagen generation Also used as a temporary cosmetic filler.
  16. Hexyl Laurate – Skin conditioner.
  17. Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate – Skin conditioner.
  18. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 – A hero peptide that is used in skin care due to its ability to suppress the production of interleukins (up to 40%), the compounds that trigger an inflammatory response. It is thought to increase the skin’s production of hyaluronic acid and stimulate the synthesis of collagen, all leading to anti-ageing properties and functions. It can reduce the appearance of uneven skin tones, reduce skin roughness, fine lines, thin skin and wrinkles.
  19. Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1 – A peptide that can act as a skin conditioner and repairer. It can stimulates collagen and gylcosaminoglycans synthesis leading to decreased wrinkle length and depth, and skin roughness.

Ingredient positives – Tarte Shape Tape concealer:

  1. Water based formulation.
  2. Cyclopentasiloxane based formulation – Temporarily fills in wrinkles or crease lines to give a more “plump” look. It enhances fluidity, making the formulation more silky spreadable and it can also “lock in” water by forming a “protective barrier” on the skin.
  3. Cyclohexasiloxane – A skin conditioner that gives the product fluidity and spreadability.
  4.  Methyl methacrylate crosspolymer – A film former that can also absorb excess oils.
  5. Butylene Glycol – A humectant that can preserve water and a skin conditioner.
  6. Trimethylsiloxysilicate – A mild adhesive that makes things stick to the skin. A humectant that can enhance the product’s spreadability and give some shine to the skin.
  7. PEG-10 dimethicone – Skin conditioner.
  8. Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone: Polymer – A skin conditioner that gives a smooth and soft look and eliminates tackiness.
  9. 1,2-hexanediol – A preservative and moisture biding agent.
  10. Butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter – A skin conditioner that helps retain moisture by forming a barrier and reduces the appearance of rough patches and dry flakes. Anti-flammatory, soothes itchy, irritated or sunburnt skin. Absorbs UVB, anti-oxidant, emollient, skin replenishing. A hero compound however, it is listed under some fragrance compounds so I suspect there is only a small amount of this in this formulation.
  11. Convallaria Majalis Bulb/Root Extract – Skin conditioner.
  12. Ethyhexylglycerin – A skin conditioner that is used in ointments to treat eczema.
  13. Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract – Skin conditioner, anti-oxidant, humectant, helps control oil production and can calm and soothe acne-prone skin. Some claim it can also whiten and moisturise.
  14. Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil – This oil is rich in vitamin E but can also contain Vitamin A and C. It can protect the skin from sun-damage (but it is not as good as a sunscreen) while leaving it soft. Because of the mixture of compounds and vitamins, it is a good anti-ageing agent and it can even help boost the production of new cells because of its oleic and linoleic acid content. It is also good for people with acne, eczema or general skin redness.
  15. Leontopodium Alpinum Flower/Leaf Extract – Skin conditioner.
  16. Lilium Candidum Flower Extract – Skin conditioner and astrigent. Some claim it can heal damaged and irritated skin.
  17. Magnolia Liliflora Flower Extract – Skin conditioner.
  18. Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter – Skin conditioner and soother. Can replenish skin’s fatty acids.
  19. Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil – A skin replenishing, emollient and anti-oxidant.
  20. Paeonia Lactiflora Root Extract – Skin conditioner and anti-oxidant.
  21. Tocopherol – Refers to a class of molecules similar to vitamin E. Strong anti-oxidant and conditioner.
  22. Triethyl Citrate – Anti-oxidant and fragrance.
  23. Ulmus Davidiana Root Extract – Skin conditioner.

Ingredient negatives – Naked Skin concealer:

  1. Cyclohexasiloxane – Can harm aquatic life.
  2. Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 – Some might experience skin discoloration.

Ingredient Negatives – Tarte Shape Tape concealer:

  1. Aluminium hydroxide – Although safe at low concentrations, some studies show that topical application of aluminium compounds can lead to Aluminium accumulation in the body over time, which is a toxic non-essential metal.
  2. Amyl cinnamal – A fragrance and known irritant. This compound is used in some allergy tests to detect sensitisation to fragrances.
  3. Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil – Some might experience skin discoloration/yellowing.
  4. Parfum/Fragrance – This is a general term that refers to thousands of ingredients meaning that we don’t know everything that is in this product. I would prefer if this term was not used and companies listed them out.
  5. TBHQ –  Can cause allergies but there are also multiple other concerns listed around this compound, including cancer. There is no solid proof for any of these concerns though.

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen even products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

The following compounds present in the Naked Skin concealer have either been proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Butylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopheryl Acetate.

The following compounds present in the Tarte Shape Tape concealer have either been proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Butylene Glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, Amyl Cinnamal, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Geraniol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Hexyl Cinnamal, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool, Phenoxyethanol, TBHQ.

Verdict

With the score Urban Decay Naked Skin 3 vs Tarte Shape Tape 5 it is pretty obvious who the winner is and I would definetely agree. The Tarte concealer is definetely better than the Urban Decay Naked Skin one which in turn was better than anything I’ve tried before, meaning that the Tarte Shape Tape is rightfully the blogger’s number 1 concealer in the world. I would definetely agree with that.

I am quite annoyed with not have been able to try this earlier and with the fact that I will now have to restock my concealer from the US all the time. It’s definetely not convinient but it is good enough to be worth it.

In my post Battle of the Urban Decay Concealers – Naked Skin vs All Nighter – In Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis I said that I will not be changing my Urban Decay Naked Skin concealer any time soon. I shall eat my words!
