Birchbox April 2018 was absolutely gorgeous. The box design was in collaboration with Cath Kidston for their 25th birthday and had the typical flowery pattern that the brand is known for. This must be one of the most beautiful Birchbox boxes ever, although I wish the colours were a little more intense, the flowery pattern looks a little washed out.
Nevertheless, love Cath Kidston, their products are always so beautiful and they have patterns for everyone, even those who don’t fancy the flowery ones as much. I also love that Birchbox does this often, they collaborate with big or upcoming brands and give their box a fitting design. These collaboration boxes often include one product from that brand and/or a small discount! For example, this month’s box contained a Cath Kidston hand cream and a 15% off the brand!
Birchbox is not exactly the most popular beauty box and there are a lot of beauty enthusiasts, artists, bloggers etc that are not overly excited about it, including me, mainly due to the small size of products and the drugstore type items. However, it’s the collaborations like this which give the Birchbox box design a little boost and keep the excitement going. Beauty box unboxing is almost 50% unboxing experience and 50% actual products, so beautiful and/or branded boxes really do make a difference.
This month’s box contained 5 products, as always, of which 1 was full size and the rest were travel size. The products were, as seen in the picture, from left to right: a hand cream, a shaving gel, a BB cream, an eyebrow filler and the world’s smaller highlighter ever!
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Cath Kidston Hand Cream
This hand cream has an exclusive Birthday Rose packaging to celebrate Cath Kidston’s 25th birthday. Happy Birthday!!!
It definitely looks gorgeous and it’s an item that I think every woman would be happy to have in her handbag. The packaging is also good quality so it won’t be ruined easily and the size (30mL) is perfect for travelling.
It has a really gorgeous scent. Something between flowers and baby powder meets hand cream. It reminds me of clothes softener a little bit. It’s nicely sweet but also subtle enough to just make your hands smell nice but not overpower yourself or the room.
The texture is somewhere between a body butter and a hand cream. It’s not as thick as a body butter but at the same time not as thin as a hand cream. It’s somewhere between and it’s lovely because it gives the hands a deeper moisturising feeling than a thinner hand cream. It gets absorbed really quickly and doesn’t leave any residues behind.
It is paraben free and lasts 12M. It’s one of those product that will make you feel more feminine and positive and you know what? It’s the little things in life sometimes that make you smile.
I absolutely loved it the only reason I will not be giving it a 10 is the fact that the ingredients, although good, are just standard hand cream ingredients and there aren’t any anti-ageing or nourishing ones to keep the skin of your hands perfect for longer. This product is a Birchbox exclusive. SCORE = 9/10
Whish Shave Cream in Acai Grapefruit
Like all beauty boxes, Birchbox also comes with a little leaflet that tells you a little bit about each product. This item was listed as a “Whish Shave Crave” which obviously must be a typo but it made me laugh a lot, does anyone ever crave a shave?
This shaving cream definitely looks nice, even though the design of Whish products is usually fairly simple it is still elegant. I love the pink colour of this product, it gives the product some needed excitement that might even make you crave a shave! Or at the very least it will look good in your bathroom.
The shaving cream is off white and creamy. It doesn’t foam up a lot but it still spreads easily and softens the skin nicely. It smells floral but I must admit there was something in the scent that personally wasn’t sure if I liked. It works well though and it truly leaves the skin soft and a little moisturised after. Shaving can be quite drying and aggrieve for the skin so a little kindness from the shaving cream goes a long way.
This shaving cream is meant to moisturise (natural squalene omega 3, organic shea butter), soothe (organic green tea, organic coconut oil) and nourish (organic jojoba seed oil). It is paraben, sulfate, phthalate, DEA, TEA and petrochemical free and is made of naturally sources and organic ingredients. This product is also not tested on animals, lasts 12M and it is a Birchbox exclusive.
I must say this must be as exciting as shaving can ever be and I was overall quite happy using this shaving cream. It might actually make you crave a shave! SCORE = 9/10
Marcelle BB Cream Golden Glow Illuminator
This is meant to be a BB cream but it actually gives as much coverage as some foundations, which I’d say is a negative, because when you do want to use a BB cream you want to be wearing something lighter. Otherwise, why not wear a foundation then?
Nevertheless, it makes the skin look gorgeous. It covers a fair amount and also gives a nice summer, sun kissed glow. It was a bit too dark for me, even if I was tanned, which is sad as Birchbox has a personal beauty profile and they should know, roughly, my skin colour. As a result, sadly I won’t be using this.
It takes quite some time to dry out but it feels lightweight on the skin.
It is oil and perfume free and hypoallergenic. It gives a dewy finish but sadly, it is not transfer proof. In fact, I was able to remove a lot of it with a dry tissue and a little hard wiping. Perhaps it needed longer to fully dry, but I left it for 10 minutes and I was getting bored. How long are you meant to sit there with a wet face?! You could set it with powder but it would take away that nice dewiness and sun kissed glow.
It has a huge list of ingredients, some good, some not so good, but it will overall hydrate and smooth the skin. It definitely boosts radiance and it also blurs lines and pores.
The packaging is fairly standard and doesn’t look particularly beautiful but it’s a BB cream, it doesn’t need to be. This product is a Birchbox exclusive. SCORE = 8/10
Beautaniq Beauty Fill + Tame Brow Gel in Brunette
This is brow liquid filler that is meant to also nourish them. It has a mascara type wand that is super easy to use by brushing on to the eye brow hairs.
I got the brunette colour because I am a brunette, although, fun fact, my eye brows are naturally darker than my hair! The colour worked well for me and it sort of meshed nicely with my natural colour. My eye brows looked more filled in but in a natural way, almost as if my hairs were closer to each other to give a fuller look. It didn’t look like I used an eye brow product which I love, sometimes a slight touched natural look is great.
The hairs were never sticky or crunchy feeling. It took a while for it to dry, 15minutes+ but it got there. It is not completely smudge proof though so, don’t touch your eye brows!
The product comes in green plastic packaging with a purple pattern on the lid. It doesn’t look amazingly feminine but it stands out and sometimes that’s all that matters.
This product is cruelty free and lasts 6M. It is full size and retails for £8.60 which is definitely a cheap price when it comes to beauty products. SCORE = 8/10
ModelCo Baked Highlighter in Moonshine
I don’t know what it is about baked highlighters but they are just not my favourite. I think it’s probably the harshest texture of them that also creates texture on my crater pores skin.
Nevertheless, this baked highlighter was very subtle, even after a few layers, meaning that you can only really use it on more natural looks.
The packaging is plastic but not very durable. I can already feel that it’s going to snap at some point soon, but the worst thing is…this must be the world’s smaller highlighter ever! It is cute and definitely travel friendly but you will just about, maybe, fit your brush in it. It is as big as a thumb (see picture) and I don’t have particularly large thumbs!
It lasts 12M and it is a Birchbox exclusive. SCORE 6/10
Overall, I loved the Cath Kidston design, the box is absolutely gorgeous and it is one I will definitely keep around. The products were also interesting even though the beauty profile personalisation didn’t really work this time round. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this month’s Birchbox much more than usual, let’s hope they keep this up!
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8/10
Star product = Cath Kidston Hand Cream
