My Little Beauty Box is a new subscription beauty box which is delivered monthly to your doorstep for £35 a month. It is meant to contain a minimum of 4 full size products and a wax melt or candle as “the scent of the month”. I’ve mentioned this last time, the price tag together with the fact that the box is meant to contain high end brands, up and coming brands, and some classic products is essentially very similar to Cohorted.
This month’s MLB box definitely reminded me of Cohorted, very strongly, as it contained products that I have received from Cohorted before. In fact, 3 of them from Cohorted and two from Glossybox. However, that’s not a negative at all, it just shows that the MLB box is making some good product choices (or similar deals to other boxes) and unless you have as much makeup or beauty subscriptions as me, you will likely never have the duplicating problem anyway. I am curious though to see whether it would be worth for someone to subscribe to both Cohorted and the MLB Box as they really do appear very similar. I will definitely be writing a direct comparison article after a receive a few MLB Boxes.
What I love the most about the MLB Box is the feeling that you get when you first open it. There is just so much stuff that it is almost guaranteed that you will like a few products. It can be overwhelming, but in a good way, and what girl wouldn’t want to be overwhelmed with makeup!
The MLB Box doesn’t follow a monthly theme like other beauty boxes do but that’s absolutely fine as it would be impossible to follow a theme while containing so many products and it would be pointless if some products didn’t match the theme.
The box comes with a beauty card which contains a little bit about each product and a little extra card that has a little more information on the extra products. Last month I criticized the presentation of the products on the card and this month it is different! It’s nice to see that they changed it up and it definitely looks much better than before.
This month’s MLB Box contained 9 products of which 7 were beauty products, 1 was a sweet treat and 1 was a wax melt.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Huda Beauty Lip Strobe in Color Ritzy
I first received this product in Cohorted December 2017 and I thought that the golden color really suited the holidays. However, gold also suits the summer months so it’s not exactly out of place here either.
This lip strobe is gorgeous and it swatches even more gorgeous! It looks amazing but somehow my super white complexion doesn’t do it justice. It looks like I’ve deleted out my lips with something a little shiny. I think this would be an absolute gem for darker skin tones but it doesn’t really do much for the whiter ones.
The packaging and wand are of standard quality. This full size lip strobe retails for £17.
For me it is a little on the expensive side considering it is a bit patchy and you will need to re-apply it a lot. SCORE = 7/10
Makeup Forever Angled Eyebrow Brush 270 Straight
I love this brush. It looks great and it is of high quality.
It’s not very soft but at the same time, this type of brush is not meant to be. It works well and washes well too.
I love that at the opposite edge from the brush bristles it has a little cut angle that you can use to put hairs together or push something on, even fake lashes!
This is meant to be an eyebrow brush but you can use a brush in any way you want. I love angled brushes for creating under eye lines so feel free to experiment and see what this brush helps you do best.
This is a full size brush that retails for £15.50. It is definitely on the expensive side, you can get high quality beautiful brushes for much cheaper but there is something about this brush that I absolutely love. SCORE = 9/10
Pixi by Petra Brow Tamer
I first received this in Glossybox September 2017 and then in Cohorted October 2017 and I must say I would be happy if I received this in a box every month. This is an incredibly useful eyebrow tamer/cleaner that I absolutely love.
If you have unruly or full, thick eye brows, this is the product for you. I am blessed with thick, full eyebrows and so I rarely do anything with them other than “clean” them every time I do my make up, to take the foundation off. This clear gel is perfect for that and it also keeps them tamed, so the hairs don’t move out of shape. It lasts all day and works very well. It also doesn’t make the hairs sticky or strange feeling and noone would know that you put something one them, not even you!
The only downside of this is that because it is a clear liquid it will get dirty much faster than you will run out of it. As a result, you will have to throw it away before it is empty. Here’s a picture of a new one next to one I’ve been using once a day for 3 weeks. You can see that it becomes unsanitary fairly quickly and also doesn’t work as well when it gets so dirty. You have to throw it away before you even reached the bottom. For this reason, I love that it is a small size, I wouldn’t want to be wasting a big tube every time.
This small size is the full size of this product and even though I would normally be annoyed by that, it really works for this one. This brow tamer retails for £12 which is a very good price for what it is. SCORE = 10/10
Too Faced Melted Liquified Longwear Lipstick in Chocolate Cherries
I received this item in Cohorted November 2017, well the metallic version of it to be exact.
This liquid lipstick rage is a classic for Too Faced. This specific lipstick has a chocolate scent and the product looks cute and works well. If there is something that Too Faced does incredibly well, is producing products that look and often smell appealing and on top of that, products that actually have character.
This lipstick is not exactly a liquid lip, it doesn’t dry and stay all day but is rather a liquefied lipstick. It behaves like a normal lipstick, it comes off if you eat, drink or kiss someone, for example, but it is applied as a liquid.
The particular one gives a nice brown color. It is not too sticky and even though it does come off, it lasts longer than normal lipsticks. The chocolate scent definitely compliments it’s color but beware, your chocolate cravings might wake up!
It is a very good product overall and I even like the cushion applicator it comes with (see picture). It comes with a relatively high price tag of £19.00, but it is totally worth it considering the quality, looks and even the gorgeous smell.
If I have to say something negative about this it would only be the color. It is a gorgeous color but I think that the pinks and reds are even nicer.
I’d give it a 10 if it had an extra vitamin or ingredient to nourish for the skin. It does have vitamin E but if I can be super picky, so do a lot of products this day. I just wish there was that little extra ingredient to make this product even more special. SCORE = 9/10
Cargo Around The World Eyeshadow Palette
Well I commented on the MLB Box Instagram account last month saying that an eye shadow palette and a lipstick make a beauty box unboxing experience not only amazing but also unforgettable and this month they included a palette! I’m not sure why eye shadow palettes are so exciting, perhaps it is because they are long term products or because it is nice to include beautiful colors. Whatever the reason, there is something about eye shadow palettes that make beauty boxes so amazing.
I received this eye shadow palette in Cohorted September 2017 but it is a great palette that I am sure many MLB subscribes are enjoying right now.
As I mentioned previously, this is a palette I have seen around but never wanted to buy because…well it just looks a little boring. The colors are literally 12 shades of brown and they don’t really look inspiring to me.
However, after playing around with this palette, I have to take all of that back!
The palette came in its original outer packaging which is great. It is made of strong, thick carboard, feels quite sturdy and has a mirror. It closes magnetically and it has a some sightseeing monuments icons at the front with the “around the world” palette name.
I really like the around the world idea, especially since the company is “Cargo” and I love that the eye shadow colors are named after different big cities (not all are capitals). I wish though, that there was some kind of connection between the color and the city. I have no idea why Rome is super pale and Toronto is super dark…
Anyhow, despite the fact that the palette colors initially look underwhelming, they swatch very beautifully. They were all buttery and easy to blend, with only Toronto and Dublin being a little patchy. This is very common with dark colors though.
The first 6 colors, the top palette row, are very pale and natural. I couldn’t even see Rome on my skin. However, once a little light shines on them, like for example in a flash picture (see second swatch image, below) the colors come alive. They are definitely shiny and beautiful. Except Rome. Rome is nowhere to be found.
I’m still obsessed with Shanghai, it’s that brown-orange type of crease transition color…yes please!
This palette contains mostly shimmer colors with only Shanghai, Toronto and Madrid being real mattes. There are some colors that are not as shimmery as others but they all contain a certain amount of “shininess”.
The palette also comes with a Cargo branded brush which is great. It is very petite and easy to use. It washes well and is fairly soft. It’s a much better quality than I expected and I will definitely be using it with this palette. I really love how petite it is.
I ended up really liking this palette as the colors are very natural and so you can easily create a lot of casual, no make up – make up looks and even professional work looks. It is a palette that earns your appreciation after you swatch it and play around with it, so give it a chance. It works even better if you listen to “Around the world” by Daft Punk while you create looks!
This palette retails for £25 which is on the cheaper side for full eye shadow palettes. SCORE = 9/10
Nyx Turnt Up! Lipstick in Colour Tuls 08
I’ve never tried this range of Nyx lipsticks and so I was super excited. Also, let’s take a moment to appreciate that this month’s MLB Box not only included a full eye shadow palette but also 3 lipsticks! If you are not happy with this box you won’t be with any box!
I really like the packaging of this lipstick, even if it is fairly simple and cheap looking, it is thin, elegant and very practical. I also love that the bullet is thinner than standard lipsticks as it allows you to shape the lips easier.
I love the purple color too, even if I’m not sure I can pull it off with my super white complexion, rest assured I will definitely try to find a way. Such a gorgeous color!
This lipstick lasts for a while but like with any lipstick it comes off when eating or drinking and it will need reapplying. It has a very faint, but nicely sweet cosmetic scent and it feels nice on the lips. It’s not heavy or sticky and it doesn’t dry out the lips.
There are 22 colors in this lipstick range and I am definitely intrigued to try them out. This is a full size lipstick that lasts 12M and retails for £6.50, however, it is half price, £3.25, I repeat £3.25 on Nyx’s website at the moment!!! SCORE = 9/10
XBX Charcoal Detox Facial Mask
Well who doesn’t like a face mask. This mask was no exception, it works well and leaves the skin feeling nice afterwards too.
You are meant to put this mask on clean face, leave for 15-20 minutes and then wash the face with warm water.
It is meant to anti-blemish, revitalize and purify the face but it can also offer some anti-ageing effects as it contains hyaluronic acid.
My only criticism is the marketing of this product. It says that it “has been specifically developed using active carbon particle technology…”. As a chemist, this is an overstatement for me, it just contains charcoal and while technically charcoal contains carbon particles, meaning that this statement is not technically wrong, it sounds like a marketing over stretch to me. It just sounds fancier than it is but it is still pretty good.
Four of these masks retail for £5.99 on Amazon which is an absolutely amazing price. SCORE = 8/10
This is one of my favorite, if not my favorite chocolate. Glossybox September 2017 also included one but this is obviously not as detrimental as receiving duplicate makeup items. I promise you the chocolate from September 2017 doesn’t exist anymore.
I will keep this one around for when I really need a chocolate, as I am being extra good with my eating plan before the holidays! Nevertheless, it is definitely a nice and thoughtful addition to the box and although I’d personally prefer not having this temptation, I know there are many out there who will love getting a chocolate with their cosmetics every month.
I would give it a 10 but since it is not a cosmetic I will not be rating this item.
Sixth Scents Wax Melts
It’s really lovely that the MLB Box supports small and upcoming business and that they are aiming to include a wax melt or candle every month. This one is a much more welcome addition to the box, in my opinion, than the sweet treat.
Although this cute little heart smells lovely and looks lovey I still felt a little underwhelmed. Last month the MLB Box contained 4 little wax melts, so we are now obviously spoiled and one feels too little. Spoiled!
Still though I love the subtle, sweet and cosmetic like scent and I have thoroughly enjoyed using it.
This is also not a beauty item so I won’t score it either. However, I will give the MLB Box an extra item score of 8/10 for adding little cute extras, like the chocolate and the wax melts.
Overall, this month’s MLB Box didn’t feel as exciting as last month but I’m sure that was just me, because I have a lot of these items already. Composition wise this box was great and the palette and lipsticks would have made many ladies out there super happy. Keep it up MLB Box!
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8.6/10
Star product = Nyx Turnt Up! Lipstick in Colour Tuls 08
