The Look Fantastic beauty box was the first beauty box to arrive, month after month, during 2017 and it seems that Look Fantastic is keeping this up this year too (except in January 2018). There is something really nice about getting the box in the first couple of days of the month, instead of the second week or mid-month, and I am glad that Look Fantastic is keeping the organisation up!
Look Fantastic May came in a plain but colourful box with a solid orange lid and a hot pink tray. Look Fantastic has gone for solid box colours this year, as opposed to themed designs in 2017, but I actually love them. They are simple but colourful and they are actually more usable than the patterned designs. You can also mix and match the lids to the boxes and even give out lovely gifts in them.
This month Look Fantastic went for a “bold splash of vibrancy” theme containing products with character and ingredients to prepare you for summer. I’d definitely agree that the products contained are summer appropriate but the vibrancy was definitely lacking, other than in the colours of the box.
This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Hanyauku [Han-yo-ku] The act of walking on tiptoes on warm sand”. I love that I learnt a new word and a very descriptive one to say the least, but other than the sand-beach-summer reference, this quote doesn’t have anything to do with the “bold splash of vibrancy” theme or the products contained. It just feels a little disconnected.
Nevertheless, the Look Fantastic box also came with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products and of course, a travel size but full edition of the ELLE magazine. As always, amazing value for money.
What is really interesting is that this month the box felt quite familiar to the Glossybox, especially due to the products it contained (This Works and Sleek products). This is actually a plus as Look Fantastic hasn’t been as exciting last year. Look Fantastic (or the HUT group which is the brand behind it) has bought Glossybox and it is now becoming quite positively obvious. The Look Fantastic box seems to be improving and becoming more interesting which is great! I hope they don’t ruin Glossybox though!
This month’s box contained 6 products. From left to right, the products were: a face mask, an eye liner, teeth whitening strips, a primer-moisturiser, a serum and a contour kit.
Let’s dive in a little more deeply into how each product performed after a week’s use. Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, beauty requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa. If you tried any of these please leave your comments below!
SkinRepublic Bubble Purifying + Charcoal Face Sheet Mask
The mask came in a standard plastic one-off packaging that is typical of masks and if you ignore the slightly creepy, clearly faked, bubble face mask picture at the front, it looks nice.
The mask face sheet is big enough to fit a fair amount of face sizes but it is strangely, black instead of the typical white sheet. Nevertheless, it is as easy to use as any mask and it has a pleasant floral type of smell.
The worst thing about this mask is the itchiness. I don’t have sensitive skin or any allergies and my skin was not red or clearly irritated, so I can only assume the itchiness came from the bubbling. As you wear the mask, it slowly foams up and you can feel the bubbles bursting on your skin. It’s not painful but it can be very itchy!
The bubbles are meant to be oxygen gas which apparently go into the pores and clean them out. However, the mask also contains quite a few fruit extracts which are meant to exfoliate and brighten the skin and offer a little skin nutritional aspect too.
You are meant to wear this mask for 15-20 minutes and then wash your face with water. I wore it for 20 minutes and while I felt constantly tickled for the first 15, I started getting a nice cleansed and cooling feeling during the last 5 minutes. Overall, my skin felt clean, but not dry, and also smooth to the touch. It took away my face oils nicely and it even made my skin appear a little brighter.
This mask definitely worked for me and the ingredients are one of the best when it comes to face masks, which means that this mask will clean but also nourish, to some extend, your skin. It is also paraben free and not tested on animals.
My only question mark on this product is…would you actually wear a cleansing mask? Usually when you want to use a mask you’d do it for some extra moisturisation, repair or skin nutrition. Would you actually use a cleansing mask and not just a cleansing product to deep clean your face? Let me know in the comments below!
I liked this mask and it did what it claimed. I also love the ingredients. SCORE = 9/10
Eyeko Eye Do Liquid Eyeliner
I got this eye liner before, in my Cohorted December 2017 box, but eye liners are so standard and useful that I don’t actually mind.
This is a full size eye liner containing 2g of product which means that the one I received in the Cohorted December 2017 box truly was a travel size.
This eye liner is meant to be waterproof but it wasn’t for me. Nothing happened if water splashed on it but it came off completely with 4 strokes when water touched it and I rubbed it.
The colour though is a lovely proper matte black and it doesn’t smudge. It lasts all day and even though I personally prefer brush instead of felt tip, it was easy and practical to use.
It contains algae which admittedly is a little strange for an eyeliner. Not sure if you would want algae around your eyes either.
This full size eye liner retails for around £16 and lasts for 6M. SCORE = 8/10
Spotlight Teeth Whitening Strips
The packaging of these teeth strips is super cute. They came in a nice and sturdy cardboard box that contains 4, one-off, strips inside. I wonder if the full size product comes in a nice box like that.
These strips were created by two sisters, Irish dentists for whitening your teeth in the comfort of your own home. All you need to do is open a packet and separate the top and bottom strip. Dry your teeth and then place the strips on by placing the lower one first. You can leave the strips for up to an hour and then remove and brush your teeth. You can repeat this every day for two weeks for a brighter smile.
I’m not a dentist, I am a chemist, and the fact that these strips contain hydrogen peroxide puts me off. Hydrogen peroxide (also known as bleach) is not something I’d like to put in my mouth or on my teeth, as I can imagine it could cause some damage. This was created by dentists so I can only assume they know what they are doing but still…you just can’t convince a chemist to bleach their teeth. Sorry.
This product sounds good and I’m sure it works but I didn’t try it as I felt that the ingredients contained, even at small concentrations, might be too harsh. It even says on the product that it penetrates the top layer of enamel in order to brighten the colour. Again I’m a chemist not a dentist but I just feel like there are safer and milder ways to brighten teeth. This is not mentioned on the product but I personally wouldn’t use this on sensitive or damaged teeth.
This product should not be used if you are pregnant or under 18. Do not use if you have ulcers, exposed gums or after oral operations. These strips last for a bit more than a year. SCORE = 7/10
ThisWorks In Transit Camera Closeup
This is my go to, ride or die, primer. It has some amazing ingredients that will not only hydrate but also nourish your skin and it feels really nice. It gets absorbed quickly and it doesn’t leave any sticky residues behind.
It can be used as a moisturiser too or even a leave on face mask. It definitely makes a huge difference as to how smooth and nice my skin and makeup is and I don’t think I will be changing this any time soon.
For a full detailed review and ingredient analysis check out: Not all primers are equal. Too Faced Primed and Peachy Cooling Matte Skin Perfecting Primer VS This Works In Transit Camera Mask, Moisturiser & Primer.
According to the beauty magazine that came with this month’s Look Fantastic box, you can use this primer as a “lip liner”, I’m assuming by working it around the lips.
I never allow myself to run out of this primer but it is nice to receive a travel size tube, especially now during the holiday season. This tube lasts for 12M. SCORE = 10/10
Avant RNA Serum
This is a face serum that contains RNA and arginine. This means that it has potential for good anti-ageing action, fighting the signs of ageing such as wrinkles, sagging skin and even brown spots.
All you need to do is apply a small amount of this serum on damp clean skin and then, like with any serum, after it is fully absorbed, apply a moisturiser.
From the first use, this serum made my skin feel a little more firm. It would be nice to see how my skin would react after a week’s of usage but this sample size tube was only about a third full. As a result, since there wasn’t that much to use and test, I’m really on the fence on this one.
It felt nice, it smells good (light creamy cosmetic smell) but I didn’t get enough usage out of it to be hooked or to see results. That’s the problem with small samples…
This serum is good for 12M. SCORE = 7/10
Sleek Makeup Face Contour Kit in Medium
What I love the most about Sleek makeup is how sleek the packaging actually is. They truly weren’t joking when they called the brand Sleek.
The outer packaging is made of standard cardboard but it still looks nice and elegant. The actual palette packaging is super sleek, nice and thin, black matte plastic and just so simple and elegant. The outer packaging of the palette could have been of any high end brand. It looks and feels expensive.
The bronzer and highlighter are of good quality and they blend easily. They are not patchy and they last for hours. I wish Look Fantastic had a personal beauty profile as they would then know that the colour medium is too dark for me! Nevertheless, I’m hoping to use this more intensely after some holiday tanning.
The bronzer/contour has a creamy but mostly powdery texture whereas the highlighter is more powdery. I can’t say that the bronzer looks natural on my super white skin tone but it is definitely buildable, so if you are really white like me you could use a little and go easy, or if you want it darker you can layer it up. I might even use this as a body bronzer and highlighter, after a some tanning. The highlighter, on the other hand, is more on the natural side. It is noticeable and shiny but it won’t blind anyone.
Both contour and highlighter have a typical powder makeup smell which is pleasant.
I like this little duo, I love the packaging and I love that it contains a mirror as big as the palette. Sleek doesn’t often make bad products but neither top notch high-end quality stuff. For their price though, Sleek and including this palette, does a pretty good job.
The ingredients of this duo are very standard and there isn’t anything specifically bad but neither skin nutritious. It’s a bronzer/contour and highlighter duo though, I wouldn’t have expected more.
This full size duo retails for £6.99, which is an excellent, and it lasts for 24M which is even more excellent. SCORE = 8/10
Overall, I’m starting to think that Look Fantastic is improving this year and it is really nice to see and be excited about this beauty box again (it was one of my least favourite ones in 2017). This month’s box contained some excellent products which I thoroughly enjoyed. The only let down was the small, sample size serum.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8.2/10
