Pretty Little Palettes The Sassy One – In Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

Everyone loves an eye shadow palette. They are high value items which last a long time and bring some colour and character into the look. There’s something about eye shadow palettes that also make us feel feminine and beautiful.

However, with so many eye shadow palettes out there it can be difficult to choose sometimes. Some buy palettes because it’s their favourite brand and others look for palettes with specific colours.

Pretty Little Palettes has sent me the perfect palette for summer to share with you. It’s the palette called “The Sassy One” and it is perfect for the summer months but also works all year round.

Without further ado, let’s get into the details of this palette.

The palette is made of strong cardboard, like most makeup palettes, and is actually quite sturdy and durable. The outer design is absolutely gorgeous. I really love the cartoon sassy lady at the front, it was absolutely beautiful to photograph.

Palettes that look nice on the outside are a major plus as this can be the deciding factor sometimes as to which palette you want to buy or use on the day. Beautiful palettes can inspire you to pick them up and use them and this one definitely falls into that category.

The palette also contains a mirror inside which is a major advantage.

The Sassy palette contains 8 colours of which 6 are matte and 2 are metallic shimmers. I love palettes that contain cohesive colours, rather than random blues or greens, and this one is exactly that. It contains different shades of brown, orange and gold, all of which go really well together and suit the summer hot months perfectly.

The palette contains a white colour called “LOL” which you can use to set your eye shadow primer or highlight the inner corners and the brow bone. It contains quite a few nice colours for transitioning and a gold brown shimmer called “Bad One” for the main lid as well as a copper meets rose gold type of shimmer colour called “Seriously Tho”. The palette also contains a darker brown for shading and so you can easily create a full look without needing another palette.

The two orange type colours called “NAH” and “Never” are absolutely brilliant for summer but even for winter as transition colours to dark black smokey eyes. If you don’t know what I mean click here for an example on my Pinterest account. It might be daunting at first but a good warm orange colour is a must have in your eye shadow collection.

Pigmentation and texture

Like with any eye shadow palette, some of the colours are more pigmented than the others. That is of course intented, you wouldn’t want all colours to be strong or soft.

The skin tone colours “LOL” and “Bitch” are the least pigmented with the orange colours “NAH” and “Never” being the most pigmented.

In terms of texture, the shadows are somewhere between powdery and creamy with more emphasis on the powdery side. They don’t have much kickback (=fallout) though which is great.

All colours are evenly pigmented to their intended strength with the only slightly let down being the darker brown colour called “K”. It is slightly patchy, however, that is very common for dark browns and blacks. All you need to do is just apply a second layer on top if you feel that it’s not even.

TIP: Using a shimmer shadow helps blend darker patchy colours easier.

TIP: If you want to make some of the shimmer or other colours more intense, pick them up on your brush or finger and then spray them with a setting spray to wet them a little. Then apply immediately and directly on the eye lid using a dragging motion.

Not convinced? Check out this swatch video:

All colours blended easily and well. The only one that needed a little more work than the others was, as mentioned above, the darker brown called “K”. Nothing major though and nothing unexpected.

I always use an eye shadow primer underneath and I set it with the white colour called “LOL” which created a nice even based and helped the shadows blend easier.

These eye shadows lasted all day without creasing but bear in mind that I always use an eye shadow primer first, which I then set with the lightest colour in the palette, in this case the colour “LOL”.

The colours faded a little after a 12hour wear which is absolutely normal.

Transfer proof tests

These eye shadows do not transfer if you simply touch your eye, however, they naturally fade if you wipe them off with your fingers.

The quality of the palette is great. The packaging is really sturdy and amazingly beautiful and the eye shadow colours are gorgeous, cohesive and they have minimal kickoff. They last all day long and look even more beautiful when enhanced with a setting spray.

Neither the packaging or the eye shadows smell of anything.

Here’s what the brand has to say about this palette:

Give your make up collection the attitude its missing. With colours to match any level of sass, this palette is perfect from its natural blends to its sparkling glitters.

This palette lasts for 24M which is great. This gives you two years to use it up which is great value for money.

The palette contains 12 ingredients and 11 may contain pigments. Eye shadow palettes tend to have simple formulations as all they need to achieve is to add pigment and stay on the eye.

Overall, the ingredients in this palette are good. Generally speaking, there aren’t any ingredient positives or negatives in this product as it is not meant to nourish the skin. At the same time, there aren’t any bad ingredients either. Nevertheless, here’s a short explanation on the roles that these ingredients are likely playing in this specific product.

Ingredient positives:

  1. Synthetic Fluorphlogopite – A bulking agent and pigment.
  2. Mica – A pigment with translucent and skin hugging properties which gives products some shine.
  3. Talc – An abrasive (=can polish a surface), absorbent, anti-caking and bulking agent. Contrary to popular belief, talc is safe when found in eye shadows, unless it is breathed in large quantities as a powder.
  4. Phenyl Trimethicone – A skin conditioner.
  5. Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate – A skin conditioner, humectant (locks water in) and emollient.
  6. Bismuth Oxychloride – Also known as synthetic pearl and found often in mineral makeup. A pigment, absorbent and texture enhancer. It can reflect light away from the skin camouflaging age spots and wrinkles.
  7. Nylon-12 – An absorbent that reduces shine. It can give a silky feeling to the skin and doesn’t settle into lines.
  8. N-Lauroyl-L-Lysine – Skin conditioner.
  9. Magnesium Stearate – An anti-caking and bulking agent and pigment.
  10. Polymethylsilsesquioxane – An anti-caking agent, emollient and a slip agent giving a silky smooth feel.
  11. Phenoxyethanol – A preservative and stabiliser. Can also be used as a fragrance, insect repellent and solvent.
  12. Caprylyl Glycol – A skin conditioner, anti-microbial preservative, an emollient and humectant (locks water in).

Ingredient negatives:

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

Check out: What is sensitive skin? What are the causes and what can we do?

With that being said, the following compounds present in this palette have been either proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Bismuth Oxychloride, Phenoxyethanol.

I really loved this palette a lot more than I though I would. I was sceptical at first because I haven’t heard of the brand before but I actually really enjoyed the palette.

The packaging is very beautiful and sturdy and the colours contained are cohesive which I personally love. It has a mirror which is a must for me in a palette and the colours are gorgeous and usable all year long but especially for the summer months. The shadows are of good quality, appropriately pigmented and they last for hours with the use of an eye shadow primer. It is also much more affordable than other palettes in the market.

I recommend this palette. To get yours click here.
