Beauty Product Discovery – My Little Beauty Box July 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

I love beauty boxes and even though, like any beauty blogger, I have a room full of beauty products, I still think it’s very important to subscribe to them. Beauty boxes are an amazing and cheaper way to keep up with the current beauty market and try out products that perhaps you wouldn’t otherwise.

The My Little Beauty Box (MLB Box) is one of the monthly beauty boxes I subscribe to and even though it is overall fairly early days for it (the box only started in March 2008) I have been enjoying it so far.

This month’s MLB Box came in it’s standard branded black box which closes magnetically. This beauty box doesn’t follow a monthly theme like other beauty boxes do but I actually prefer that in this case, as the MLB Box often contains more than 5 items and it would almost be impossible for all of them to fit the theme. Plus, even the beauty boxes that do have themes, don’t seem to follow them strictly anyways.

The box also comes with a beauty card which contains a little bit of information about each product and a little extra card that contains information on the extra products.

This month’s MLB Box contained 8 products of which 7 were beauty related products, 1 was a sweet treat.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Urban Decay Big Fatty & 24/7 Duo

This Urban Decay duo contains a full size mascara and an travel size eye liner.

I loved the liner, it looks so sleek and expensive and it also works well. The colour it came in, “Riot”, is actually much nicer than I expected.

Urban Decay Big Fatty 247 Duo 6_20180723103042252

It looks like a dual chrome, although I’m not sure if it’s meant to be. It looks dark grey from one angle and purple from another and it even has tiny scattered pieces of glitter.

It lasts all day and doesn’t smudge. It’s also very easy to sharpen, cool it in a freezer first if you have troubles. This pencil lasts for 24M.

The mascara on the other hand wasn’t as good as the pencil. The wand has short plastic bristles, which I personally don’t like, and in general it looks a lot more impressive than it is.

Urban Decay Big Fatty 247 Duo 4_20180723102922916

The chuncky exterior almosts promises chunkcy eye lashes but that was not the case. It gives medium length lashes that are not particularly thick. There isn’t anything negative about it, it works ok but it’s a little mediocre. On the plus side, it lasts all day and doesn’t smudge. This mascara lasts for 6M.

Urban Decay Big Fatty 247 Duo3_20180723103357247

This duo retails for £29 which is a good deal, it comes to £14.50 per item which is not bad. The let down in this duo is the mediocre mascara otherwise, the score would be higher. SCORE = 7

Clinique Makeup/Travel Bag

I don’t recall ever receiving a beauty company branded makeup bag from a beauty box (Birchbox did their own makeup bag once), so it’s nice to see such an item be included in the MLB Box.

This Clinique makeup bag is fairly large, but not very wide, and has a nice spring, colourful design. It’s made of thin cloth material on top of waterproof plastic and so it doesn’t feel particularly expensive but it is durable.

There is nothing on the bag to indiciate that it is a Clinique bag other than a tag inside and the zipper outside. That could be a negative for some but also a positive for others.

This full size makeup bag retails for £10 and definetely looks cute. I’d presonally prefer a little more branding and a slightly more expensive feeling material but it’s a nice product and a good job for MLB including it. SCORE = 8/10

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Colour Venom

Three Urban Decay items in one beauty box? Don’t know about you but I’m happy! I like Urban Decay, especially their lipsticks and eye shadows, they are top notch.

I actually have this lipstick colour in the Creme “normal” range Urban Decay lipstick and so I was intrigued to find out the difference between those and the Revolution ones. However, firstly let me just say that the colour Venom, whichever version lipstick you get, is G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! It might not be an every day, casual or even work-wear but it is a center piece type of lip! Love it.

Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick 3_20180723102730009

Back to the revolution vs creme lipstick. Other than the packaging, I didn’t initially think there is a difference except perhaps in how long the lipstick lasts.

The revolution lipstick came in an almost identical outer packaging (well it says revolution in small letters but it can be easy to confuse) but the actual lipstick bullet packaging is very different.

It still very much looks like an Urban Decay lipstick but the twisting part at the bottom of the lipstick is much larger. Additionally, te lipstick bullet has a different shape and is contained within a purple metallic frame. I personally thought that their classic lipsticks and classic bullet shapes are better and easier to use but that might be just personal preference.

Nevertheless, the lipstick worked well didn’t dry the lips and stayed on for long. It of course came off when drinking or eating but not entirely, there was still a fair amount of pigment left on the lips. I thought that the creme Venom lasted slightly more than this Revolution Venom but that is just a feeling and I don’t have good proof for it. It would make sense though considering this one is meant to be more moisturising and so perhaps grabbing on to the lips a little less.

The lipstick feels nice on the lips and looks even nicer. May I remind you of the gorgeous colour one more time? Look at that!

It doesn’t feather and it is not streaky. It even contains some nice ingredients such as Jojoba oil, avocado oil, coconut butter and shea butter as well as vitamin E and some fruit oils.

This is a 2.8g full size lipstick which retails for £15.50, similar price as their “normal” lipstick range (£1 cheaper depending where you buy from). The lipstick lasts for 18M. Gorgeous colour. SCORE = 9/10

Elethea Revitalising High Protection Fluid

My last Elethea moisturiser experience wasn’t good. The formulation was bad and the product was separating, even after a lot of shaking. As a result, you might imagine I wasn’t too fond of this one to begin with.

Sadly, as soon as I opened the bottle I was dissapointed again. The seal or the way the bottle is made is not good as the cream was out all over the pump and inside the lid and it didn’t matter if I tighten it, it was still a mess next time.

Atleast the cream didn’t separate this time. It has a pale yellow colour and a light texture but is not as easy to spread as it initially looks. It feels like the product is spreading everywhere easily and quickly but then upon inspection your skin will have more cream in some areas than others. Nevertheless, the cream gets absorbed quickly but it leaves a white appearance on the skin, as if you used a foundation that is 1-2 shades lighter than you.

Nevertheless, this cream is meant to be used during the day, to avoid sun damage as it contains SPF 30, and although there are some good under makeup SPF creams that will not give you a white look, a lot of them will so we will forgive this one. If you wear it under foundation it won’t matter anyways.

The bottle is nice, even though the pump sealing didn’t work well, and is made of glass. The outter packaging also definetely stands out. I love how expensive it looks overall and that the packaging keeps the bottle standing securely inside, which also makes me think that the bottle leaking was perhaps a bottle design issue and not a transportation problem.

The ingredients are fairly standard but there are also some nice ones such as some seed oils and extracts and mel. The packaging says that this cream contains “rift valey algae complex” but that’s not included in the ingredient list. Unless they included this under a different name which quite frankly is confusing.

This is a 50mL full size product that retails for £19.99 and lasts for 12M. I am unfortunately still not convinced. SCORE = 6/10

Laura Geller Retractable Powder Brush

I got the exact same brush in this month’s Cohorted box, one more little hint that the two beauty boxes are very similar.

Laura Geller Retractable Powder Brush_20180718130808390

This is a retractable travel friendly brush with a cap. Although, it’s not useful only when you are travelling, but also in general for protecting the brush from dust. Nothing is more annoying that finding little dust traces on your face while doing your makeup! Is it just me?

The outer of the brush is metallic but not very durable. It is quite easy to bend with a little force.

Laura Geller Retractable Powder Brush 2_20180718132258112

However, the brush is super, super soft and it works really well with the bronzer but also with blushes. It also washes well and is easily reusable.

This full size brush retails for £12 which for a branded brush is actually cheap! I just wish the outer metal was a little more durable. SCORE = 9/10

Beautiful Bathing Treats Hand Made Wax Melt

The MLB Box has included products from this company before but it’s still nice to see that they are supporting small businesses. I also love that there is a candle or wax melt in, almost, every box. It’s a nice little addon and in a way still a beauty item as nice scents can make you feel beautiful.

Beautiful Bathing Treats Hand Made Wax Melt_20180723102850221

I loved this wax melt, it smells gorgeous, like a soft clothes conditioner mixed with a subtle female perfume. It’s a very pretty but light aroma that would work nicely for any room in the house.

The wax melt doesn’t come in fancy packaging but to be honest I didn’t even realise until I wrote this. If you like burning candles, you will use these up so quickly you won’t care about the packaging that much.

This is not a direct beauty item but for this and the next item extras I will give the MLB Box an extra score of 8/10.

Mentos Choco & Caramel

I personally don’t like the sweet treat presence in a beauty box because I simply just don’t want the temptation and I always end up giving them away. I’d personally would prefer a second wax melt or candle or of course another beauty or even decoration item, but I know that many would like this and so I understand it’s presence.

Mentos Choco & Caramel _20180723104209377

This is not a beauty item so I will not score it here.

My Little Beauty Box July 2018 7_20180723103710936

Overall, I’m starting to think that the MLB Box is slowly settling down for 5 beauty products plus 2 extras, of which one is a wax melt or candle and the other a sweet treat. Let’s see if this is the case over the next few months! I liked this month’s box, it was definetely very good value for money. More Urban Decay please.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 7.8/10

Star product = Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Colour Venom
