Beauty Product Discovery – The MLB Beauty Box August 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

The MLB box is a relatively new beauty box, which started this March 2018, and has been a little shaky since. The amount of products contained in the box changed, there wasn’t always a wax melt or scent of the month contained as they advertise the box to be and this month the box was, well a month late.

MLB did contact their subscribers to explain the situation and although I personally didn’t mind so much, if I’m not getting it this month it will be the next, no biggy, it is still one more example that shows that this box is still at its infancy and this kind of inconsistency will upset many. What bothered me is that the MLB box said that they will include a few extras, as a sorry we are late apology, but that didn’t seem to be the case, for my box at least. All products contained were listed on the monthly cards (it always contains an extras card) and there weren’t any more extra products than usual. I actually wouldn’t have minded not getting anything extra, I’ve seen business form and I know the chaos that happens behind the scenes but the fact that they stated they will be extra items and then didn’t include them is disappointing.

On the plus side,  the biggest strength of this box, even if it is at its infancy, is that it contains known brands and full size products, month after month, and it is truly a box that makes you excited to open.

The August MLB Box came in its standard branded black box. This beauty box doesn’t follow a monthly theme like other beauty boxes do but that’s ok as many of them don’t follow the theme anyway!

The box also comes with a beauty card which contains a little bit of information about each product and a little extra card that has information on the extra products (you get the extra product card every month, those products are not for this month’s box being late).

This month’s MLB Box contained 8 products of which 7 were beauty products and 1 was a sweet treat. The biggest strength of this box though, even if it is at is infancy, is that it contains known brands and full size products, month after month, and it is truly a box that makes you excited to open.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Laura Geller Spackle Undereye Multicare Eye Primer

I must admit I was a little confused as to what this product actually is. If it’s not an eyeshadow primer, what kind of eye primer is it? It is apparently an eye primer that firms, hydrates and refreshes the under eye area.

It is a white cream, contains Jojoba seed oil and Aloe Vera amongst other ingredients and has a very faint cosmetic cream scent. It comes with an under eye applicator, which makes it easier to spread and it feels very cooling and soothing on the skin.

My under eyes definitely looked a little brighter and I felt more awake but don’t expect miracles, it won’t erase your black circles. It worked much better on it’s own and failed a little when I applied concealer over it. I used the Tarte Shape Tape and the product was moving, creating little rolled bits that came off and in general didn’t look great. I haven’t given up on this product just yet, I’m still trying to make it work but my first impression was that it’s not great under makeup.

This 14.5mL tube is a full size product which retails for £20 and lasts for 12M. SCORE = 8/10

Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner in Colour Perfect Nude

I love this liner. It looks really nice and it even has a nice grip on the pen to make using it even more appealing and practical.

The colour is nice, it goes well with a lot of lipstick colours and the product feels creamy and kind on the lips. It’s very easy to use and it doesn’t need sharpening.

All you need to do is twist…the grip handle at the bottom of the pencil! I was so confused at first trying to twist the top, as you would normally with pencils of this sort, but that’s just an empty spot! If you look at the picture below you can actually open up that part, there is nothing in it and nothing is connected to it. It was a little confusing at first as the usual place for twisting pencils is up there and since the part does twist (just doesn’t give you more pencil out) you might accidentally think that your pencil is broken.

This pencil has a plasticky smell which I think is from the plastic packaging of the pencil than the actual lip liner itself. Nevertheless, it’s not very intense.

Nevertheless, I loved this pencil and I will likely buy it. It is a full size 0.4g product which lasts for 24M and retails for £17. SCORE = 9/10

MAC Pigment Colour Powder in Colour Violet

Well who doesn’t love getting MAC products in their beauty box. And even though I am not a fan of single eye shadows because, they go into a drawer and get forgotten (palettes are just superior), I didn’t mind this one.

It’s essentially a loose eye shadow, which means that you only need a tiny amount and you will likely have a lot of fallout from excess product being picked up. The whole process can be a little messy but after you see the colour of this you will not mind! It’s just a gorgeous, shimmery purple!

It lasts all day, doesn’t crease (I always use an eye shadow primer) and will last you for a long time, as you only need a dot of the stuff. It’s so pigmented!

It comes in a plastic bottle with an external and internal lid to stop you from getting it everywhere (but you still will) and it is truly one of the most beautiful purple shades I’ve seen.

This product doesn’t smell of anything. It is a full size product which retails for £16.50 which is as much as a lipstick! It definitely sounds like a lot of money for one shadow, especially since for 3 of them you could get an entire palette, but remember this little pot contains a lot more product than a single eye shadow in a palette. SCORE = 9/10

Laura Geller Baked Eyeshadow Duo in Colour Fine Wines

Beyond not liking single shadows, I also don’t like the baked ones. I find them more hard and less buttery and in general not as easy to work with. Anyone else feeling the same?

However, I actually liked this little duo. The colours are nice, although you will need another one at least to create a full look. I guess you could also mix them for an in-between colour.

The packaging is of high quality and looks nice. It even comes with a tiny mirror inside which is very practical.

The floral pattern on the shadows will make you feel bad for using them up, because it is so beautiful, but it still gives the little duo a special look. They definitely don’t look as “boring” as other eyeshadow duos.

This full size duo shadow 3g product retails for £21 and lasts for 24M. In my opinion though, your money is better spent if you save another £10 or so and get a full eyeshadow palette from any of the big brands. SCORE = 8/10

Korres Cheek Blush in Colour Chara Crimson

This is a gel-type blush that lasts all day, is very pigmented and has a buildable colour.

It doesn’t work very well if you drag swatch it (it looks stripey) but it works amazingly if you pat or dub it into the skin. It looks very natural but it can quickly get quite intense (the swatch picture is 3 layers of blush) so use a tiny amount!

The product doesn’t smell of anything and although it’s a gel-type blush it is not sticky.

It comes in a plastic tub that unscrews open. The rose design on the red lid gives it a nice touch and I even love the Greek quote on the side of the product which says “Ο,ΤΙ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΟΜΟΡΦΟ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΛΟ, ΚΑΙ ΟΠΟΙΟΣ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΚΑΛΟΣ ΣΥΝΤΟΜΑ ΘΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΟΜΟΡΦΟΣ” which means “Anything that is beautiful is good, and whoever is good will soon be beautiful”. It’s a cute little touch.

This is a full size blush which retails for £17.50.  SCORE = 8/10

Soap & Glory Poutstanding Lip Crayon in Colour Pink Positive

This double sided lip crayon is meant to contour your lips. The thicker line can give shine whereas the thinner one is matte. You can essentially use them as you wish, perhaps both as lip liners or one or both as lipsticks. I like using the thin one as a liner and the thick one as the lipstick. However you use them, they are both buttery, work well and the colour is lovely.

The product comes off when eating or drinking like with any lipstick but it lasts a good amount of time. The colour of the thinner line is a little darker but compliments the thicker one nicely and they both work really well together as a liner-lipstick combo. They feel lightweight, non-sticky and non-drying but at the same time neither moisturising.

The pencil looks really nice and even though I hate sharpening lip or eye pencils, it’s nice to get some every now and again. However, the fact that you have to sharpen it is the biggest drawback of this product which in a way is good to not have anything else bad to say!

Soap & Glory Poutstanding Lip Crayon in Colour Pink Positive 4_20180912094454527

This full size pencil (2.3g shine + 0.6g matte) retails somewhere between £2.99-7.78 depending on the retailer and lasts for 36M, although considering it goes on the lips you should probably not use it for that long. Can’t believe the price, this is a great product. SCORE = 8/10

Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm Limited Edition

With the colder months coming you will definitely be needing a lip balm, so this is a great type of product to start getting in beauty boxes.

This specific lip balm is meant to be a limited edition, although I am not sure what is limited about it, it either doesn’t specify on the product or it’s not clear because I didn’t get it.

Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm Limited Edition 3_20180912130718556

Although I like that this lip balm is not sticky, at the same time I felt that I had to put some effort into sliding it around my lips (my hands were cold so the product was more stiff which is something that can easily happen when it’s…cold. The warmer the product or your fingers, the easier it will be to apply it). It also contains menthol which gives a taste, smell and a slight burning sensation on the lips. It’s almost like wearing Vicks on your lips which I personally didn’t like. There are also some who believe that menthol can be slightly damaging to the skin. This might be the type of product you want to use on very specific occasions.

It also didn’t really moisturise the lips deeply. After the product faded away the lip skin wasn’t as conditioned as with other lip balms.

Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm Limited Edition 4_20180912130749706

It just overall didn’t feel special or limited edition in any way, but on the bright side I really liked the good quality of the packaging and the design. Is it the design of the top lid that is limited edition?

This is a 7.5g balm is a full size product which retails for £4.99 and lasts for 12M. SCORE = 7/10

I’d still recommend you get the Oryza Balm instead. Check out: Cheaper and Better Than Your Lip Balm? Check out the Oryza Dewy Glow Skin Beauty Balm In-Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis

Happy Mallows Romantic Rasperry & White Chocolate

I’ve said this many times already but here goes one more. Since this box advertises itself as containing a wax melt or scent of the month, I would have preferred to get that over sweets. I don’t need the temptation and at the same time the box promises something that it again didn’t include this month.

Nevertheless, when I saw these marshmallows I was impressed. They are huge, fluffy and they contain pieces of white chocolate and jam! What could possibly be wrong with that!

Unfortunately, to me and my partner they tasted synthetic (which is something I don’t say often as a chemist) but I will never forget how amazing they looked.

These mallows are gluten free. I will not score this item as it is not beauty related.

Overall, this month was another testament on the fact that this beauty box is still at its infancy. However, on the bright side the products contained were great. I look forward to opening this box and receiving all the full size branded products it contains but I do hope they become more consistent soon.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10

Overall box score after product testing (a sum of product scores) = 8.1/10

Star product = Too Faced Perfect Lips Liner in Colour Perfect Nude
