Why get a Beauty Advent Calendar
Advent calendars are part of the December festivities and traditions for many of us, no matter where you are from or what culture you were brought up in. They provide a cute way of counting down to the holidays, even if you don’t celebrate Christmas and it’s a fun way to look forward to your time off work.
I personally love Advent Calendars especially due to the fact that you can get one for pretty much any subject or hobby you like. As a fitness junkie I’m glad that we are moving away from the traditional, chocolate containing, advent calendars and I am more than happy to fuel my beauty addiction with them! These days you can get Advent Calendars with beers, whiskeys, teas, even sex toys and calendars for your pets! There’s so many Advent Calendars out there that I am sure you will find at least one to suit you and your budget.
Other than treating yourself, Advent Calendars like beauty boxes, are also an amazing way of discovering different beauty products that you perhaps wouldn’t pick up yourself of wanted to pay full price for them and even ones you didn’t even know existed.
Last year’s, 2017, Beauty Advent Calendar choices
Last year I went for the Look Fantastic 2017 Advent Calendar because I wanted a calendar that contains a variety of products and brands but I also chose to go for the Estée Lauder multi-brand one (contains products from the different Estée Lauder owned companies including MAC etc) because I love Estée Lauder and some of their brands like MAC. If you missed this post check out: Let’s Talk Beauty Advent Calendars 2017. Look Fantastic vs Estée Lauder And others.

However, while I thoroughly enjoyed the Estée Lauder multi-brand one and I would recommend it in a heartbeat, I found it to be the least exciting one because when you get a calendar with products from a brand you love, you will either have them all or at least have tried them all, or most, already. That makes the calendar slightly less exciting, especially because calendars from high-end brands like these tend to contain samples or travel size products, which also means they are not great for topping up your makeup bag. Not to mention that they are the most expensive calendars to get.
I was also highly disappointed by the lack of effort put in the Estée Lauder 2018 multi-brand Advent Calendar this year as it looks exactly the same as last year 2017, with the different being just the colour of the day numbers being from gold in 2017 to metallic red in 2018. For a £150 I’d expect a bit more.
Click here to see or buy the Estée Lauder Companies 2018 calendar from the brand’s website including a list of what’s inside it. There is also an Estée Lauder only Advent Calendar if you don’t like the rest of their companies but it includes products for only 12 days which in my opinion is not a true Advent Calendar.
This year’s, 2018, Beauty Advent Calendar Choices
This year I decided to repeat the Look Fantastic 2018 Advent Calendar as it was the most exciting one and an amazing value for money. It contained some full size products and a lot of travel sized ones and in general allowed me to try out products and brands from all over the beauty market.
I’ve also picked up the Glossybox 2018 Advent Calendar which did not exist last year, as I think that Glossybox does the best subscription beauty boxes and therefore, their Advent Calendars have a good chance to be great too. Glossybox is also a multi-brand calendar which also allows you to try out different products and brands and be surprised every day. It also contains some full size products.
I also believe (although I didn’t do the math, this is just a feeling) that the Look Fantastic and Glossybox Advent Calendars are better value for money in terms of the investment you make, ie. what you pay and what you get, plus the products contained will last you longer. The Look Fantastic 2018 Advent Calendar retails for £79 or £69 if you are a Look Fantastic beauty box subscriber and it is said to have a value over £300. Click here to have a look at the brand’s website.
Similarly, Glossybox retails for £99 or £75 if you are a Glossybox beauty box subscriber which is even worth it if you just subscribe for a month and then cancel! This Advent Calendar is also said to be worth over £300. Click here to have a look at the brand’s website.

The only downside between the two is that Glossybox recently formed a collaboration with Look Fantastic which means that their style is slowly becoming in sync. However, I noticed that this had more impact on the Look Fantastic beauty boxes while Glossybox remained great as always. In general the change was all positive but it might mean that the two calendars are very similar and you might find that boring. Although, there’s only so many ways you can do a beauty advent calendar and at least they do not contain the same products.
Lastly, something to consider before purchasing any Advent Calendar is how long you want it to run for. Some Advent Calendars run for 12 days, some for 24 and some for 25. For me it was important that they run for 25 days as in my culture Christmas is on the 25th but I know than there are many who find this odd and prefer a 24 day calendar. Although, how can you say no to one extra product!
Let’s have a slightly more detailed look at the two calendars I chose for 2018.
Look Fantastic 2018 Beauty Advent Calendar
Last year’s calendar was absolutely gorgeous and it had a beauty in wonderland theme. This year the design is much simpler but I still absolutely love it! It looks simple and elegant and I love red!
What I like most about the Look Fantastic Calendar is that it is not Christmas specific. You can reuse the case all year round, for makeup storage etc, and it is also appropriate for those who do not celebrate Christmas.
Last year’s calendar came with daily boxes found in drawers, so reusing it was much easier and practical than this year’s. All you had to do is throw away the boxes and use the drawers. However, this year the design is cut to fit certain shapes of boxes which means that you can still use the shelfs of it (if you throw away the boxes) but they are not even. You could of course use it with the drawers if you don’t mind or decide to hide the numbers.
This calendar contains 25 products so it runs from the 1st of December until the 25th, Christmas day. There is a separate drawer for each day and the products are covered in paper so you will not get a spoiler if you accidentally open the wrong one.
Glossybox 2018 Beauty Advent Calendar
Last year Glossybox did a 12 day calendar so I’m really happy to see that this year they are doing their first, full size beauty Advent Calendar!
The box looks gorgeous and although the design is not Christmas specific it has a Christmas reference saying “All I want” and I guess referring to the iconic song “All I want for Christmas” by Mariah Carey.
The products are found inside beautiful small Glossyboxes and the entire calendar is arranged almost like Tetris or Jenga, you have to be careful not to pull another one off at the same time. The boxes all sit on back shelfs which means that when December is over, you could throw them all away and use the box’s shelfs for small bottle or other item storage.
This calendar contains 25 products so it runs from the 1st of December until the 25th, Christmas day. There is a separate box for each day.
There’s even some very pretty writting behind the doors!
Other Beauty Advent Calendars
As I mentioned above, I was tempted, but not impressed this year, by the Estée Lauder one which would be my third choice and for fourth choice I would recommend the MAC Advent Calendar.
However, this all depends on your budget and which brands you like. This is why I recommend the Look Fantastic and Glossybox the most because they are multi-brand and there will be something in them to suit everyone.
I think that Beauty Advent Calendars are an amazing way to treat yourself, look forward to your well earned time off and discover, cheaply, some new product loves and hates.
Perhaps you might prefer getting 1 multi-brand calendar and 1 specific brand one or you can only afford one. Whatever you choose it is a guaranteed nice experience. With beauty Advent Calendars across all price ranges there is really no excuse to not treat yourself to one!
