I was really looking forward to the December beauty boxes as I was imagining really festive, colourful makeup appropriate for the season. Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, it’s still nice to have one beauty box a year were colours, glitter, bath bombs and eyeshadows dominate.
Sadly, while the box design was very festive indeed, the contents of the box were not. However, I actually thought that the products contained were really nice and would have made an excellent box at any other time in the year. I just really wanted that festive red lipstick, those shimmery shadows or luxury bath bomb. Even if you don’t believe in Christmas, it would have been a nice celebratory box for the end of the year.
The theme this month was “The Christmas Edition” which admittedly was a little surprising as Look Fantastic seemed to be neutral in previous years, referring to that time of the year as “winter holiday” or “winter festivities” etc. Nevertheless, I personally don’t mind, just an observation. The box itself came with a red design with a gold circle pattern. It looks nice and fits the theme and time of the year.
This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Believe in the magic of Christmas”.
The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money. To subscribe to Look Fantastic and get £5 off your first box click here.
This month’s box contained 6 products. From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: a makeup primer, a beauty sponge, a sleeping aid, a brow pencil, an eye serum and a scalp treatment.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!
Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer
This primer is meant to hydrate your skin but also provide a base for your makeup.
It feels hydrating to the skin which is no surprise as it is literally a gel. It’s not as easy to spread as a cream, as it breaks off in little gel pieces, but it’s not hard either. It gets absorbed quickly and doesn’t leave any residues behind.
It has a subtle calming scent and it lasts for 9M. It’s not the best base for oily skin but it worked well under makeup, giving a dewier finish to my matte foundation. I actually liked that as super matte foundations can look a little harsh and unnatural. This primer made my matte foundation a little shinier but still overall matter, it just looked like the natural skin shine. I will be testing this product further and if it works as well as it seems I might keep even stock up on it for those times when I want a slightly less harsh finish.
The ingredients are not bad but neither specially nourishing, so don’t think of this as your best skincare. SCORE = 7/10
Limited Edition Look Fantastic Beauty Sponge
A beauty sponge is always handy to have around, even if you have a couple. I really like that Look Fantastic does branded products every now and again, I just wish that it was Christmas related this time!
This sponge has the typical Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge cut at the bottom (it’s flat) and works really well.
It is a little more dense (so not as bouncy) than a Real Techniques or Beauty Blender sponge but it’s still nice to use.
It blends foundation well and absorbs a normal amount of the product, like any other sponge. There isn’t anything special (other than it feels more dense) about it but neither anything negative. It’s a nice beauty sponge that I will be using up in no time. SCORE = 9/10
This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray
I’ve first received this product in the November 2017 Look Fantastic box, so it’s been a year!
You are supposed to spray this on your pillow before you go to bed and it is meant to calm you and help you not only fall asleep but also have better quality sleep.
It smells very calming, a bit like lavender products but not just. It’s not a bad smell but it can be annoying to some people, including me, to have a strong smell in the bedroom. So annoying that it might actually keep you awake. However, there were also times when I found it calming and soothing. It depends on the mood but I think that overall you will have to use it every day and slowly associate this with calm and sleep before it really works.
I have had one night of amazing, haven’t slept that well in years sleep, the first time I used it actually, but since then I wasn’t all that impressed, so it might even have been a placebo effect.
If you have troubles with your sleep, I feel you and I know that “anything” is worth a try so see if it works for you. SCORE = 6/10
Karla Lagerfeld + ModelCo Brow Pencil
Look Fantastic doesn’t have a personal beauty profile so I am quite happy that I accidentally received the right colour brow pencil!
The pencil looks and feels luxurious. It works well both while shading in or using with stroke motions. It’s soft enough to not feel aggressive on the eyebrows but not so soft that it’s hard to use.
The colour is even and it doesn’t smudge. If you don’t mind having to sharpen a pencil then this product might be worth a try. This pencil lasts for 12M. SCORE = 8/10
Dr Botanicals Pomegranate Superfood Brightening Eye Serum
This is an eye serum that can help smooth and refine the under eyes by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and also brightening the skin.
I’ve used this serum 3 times now, all before going to bed. I’ve woken up with nicely bright eyes but that’s usually the case in the morning anyways. The serum felt nice on the skin, it was absorbed quickly and it didn’t leave any residues behind.
It’s a runny liquid with a pale yellow colour and a very faint smell of oil. The ingredients are interesting and I love that the bottle comes with a dropper.
It’s hard to say whether this product works or not after a couple of uses but it has some potential. The product is vegan, cruelty free and 100% natural but sadly only lasts for 3M. SCORE = 8/10
Grow Gorgeous Scalp Detox
I’ve tried this product a couple of times now, from beauty boxes and advent calendars. Although I really liked it and the experience was overall pleasant, I couldn’t really tell a difference on my hair or scalp (although that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work), so I still never considered purchasing it.
Nevertheless, this product smells gorgeous! It has a strong sweet, cosmetic smell mixed with feminine perfume. I almost wish they make a perfume out of it!
You are meant to use this product as a pre-wash treatment on your scalp, 1-2 times a week. It is meant to cleanse and unclog blocked pores that might disrupt hair and scalp health. It doesn’t foam up, so you end up using a lot until you are sure all of your scalp is cleansed but at least you don’t need to wait around like a hair mask, you can rinse it off immediately if you prefer. Lots of points from me there, I hate waiting around the shower for hair masks!
The tube looks and feels luxurious and it contains a fair amount of good ingredients, a lot more than I would expect for its price!
This product is paraben free, lasts for 12M and the 50mL mini retails for £7.37 (lasts 3-4 uses). The full size 190mL retails for £28. SCORE = 8/10
Overall, the box was great and if it was any other time of the year I would have given it a 9 or a 10. For December, and especially since they went for the Christmas theme, I was expecting a red lipstick, some festive eyeshadows, a highlighter, glitter, bath bombs etc. However, it is noticeable how much better the Look Fantastic boxes have become in 2018 and according to their beauty magazine this month, they are taking it up a gear next year. I’m really looking forward to that!
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 8/10
Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.6/10
