The last Glossybox of the year has finally arrived and I was so excited to open it! The Look Fantastic December 2018 box was great but didn’t take advantage of the potential for glamour makeup. It’s not about celebrating Christmas or not, for me it’s about taking advantage of that time of the year when we have even more of an excuse to wear that red lipstick, the glitter, the eyelashes and take lots of nice warm bubble baths.
I was very excited about Glossybox because this box rarely disappoints and, spoiler alert, out of all beauty boxes this month and year, it was the closest to what I expected for December!
This month’s theme was “All that Glitters” which was also written at the front of the box in gold. The box itself was red with gold sprinkles on it. It was a very simple design and yet very beautiful and in line with the theme.
This month’s box contained 6 products (1 more than normal).of which all were full size! The products were, as seen in the picture, from left to right: a shower gel, a lip mask, a lip crayon, a blush, a body shimmer and pore strips.
Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. Imperial Leather Fantasy Icons Cosmic Unicorn Shower Gel
I absolutely love this. I love unicorns and I want to be a unicorn when I grow up. It’s the little things in life sometimes that can make you smile or cheer you up and this shower gel gives me a smirk every time, no matter how bad my day was.
The product works as well as any other shower gel, it foams up a little and feels nice on the skin. It has a silky white texture and look and has a perfume-like scent. I’m not sure if this is how I imagined unicorns smelling but it’s definitely pleasant anyways!
I love the purple colour of the bottle and the unicorn designs. In terms of ingredients, it’s just a cleansing shower gel with almost no nourishing value to it whatsoever but who cares, this product will not be part of your skincare, but it will be part of your daily dose of happiness.
This 250mL bottle lasts for 12M and retails for £1.99. It’s a cheap shower gel like any other but it will pick you up when you are feeling low and some days that’s all that matters. SCORE = 8/10
Beauty BLVD Divine Hydra-Gel Lip Mask
One of the most important rules in makeup is “the better the base the better the result” and that is also very true when it comes to the state of our lips. The better condition your lip skin is, the better your lipstick will look while also lasting longer. Not to mention that lips are skin too and we often forget to take care of it!
This product is basically a lip mask. It comes as a pink jelly-like (silicone) product in the shape of lips and is immersed in a nourishing liquid. All you are meant to do is place the lip mask on clean lips, for 10-15 minutes, and then expect more plump, tight, smooth and hydrated lips.
In reality, I personally didn’t think that this mask made much difference to my lips. They were maybe a little softer but not more moisturised or feeling in any way “better”. The results from this product were not in-line with it’s price tag for me.
The actual silicone mask is big enough for most lip sizes and surprisingly, if you stay still, it stays on the lips for the entire duration. The liquid product has a rose-like scent.
There are definitely some great ingredients but overall don’t expect miracles. This 6g pack contains 2 one-use lip masks that last for 24M and retail for £7.50. SCORE = 6/10
Doucce Relentless Matte Lip Crayon in colour Winterberry
Finally, a red lipstick! Glossybox gets it right once again.
This lip crayon claims to be waterproof, transfer proof and have a high colour payoff. It definitely has a high colour payoff and the colour is a stunning deep red. It was also waterproof, in terms of not coming off while water is being poured on it but if you rub it while wet or dry it does come off. This also means that it is not transfer proof and it will come off if you kiss someone, or on your glass when you drink something.
I personally don’t mind that and I thought that this lipstick was great. It lasts for a while and the colour is gorgeous. It doesn’t feel heavy on the lips but neither moisturising. The pencil also looks very elegant and expensive but sadly you will have to sharpen it.
This crayon retails for £16.95 which is basically as much as a mainstream to high-end lipstick. SCORE = 8/10
Niko Pro Liquid Jelly Blush in colour Bali
I’m not usually a fan of liquid/gel/cream blushes (because they take a bit more work and can sometimes ruin the makeup below) but this one works well and is very beautiful.
It comes in a plastic, very cheap looking and feeling tub that is hard to close because the lid doesn’t screw on easily. However, the blush works well, is buildable and doesn’t smell of much.
The ingredients are ok (neither amazing nor bad) and this 8g product lasts for 12M and retails for £12. Depending on your skin tone, you might even be able to use this as a highlighter. SCORE = 8/10
Bellápierre Cosmetics Shimmer Roll in colour Champagne
Finally, some glitter, well technically it is a shimmer but hey! Funnily enough, despite me contanstly saying that December beauty boxes should contain glitter/shimmers, I almost never wear glitter except during the winter holidays when I make some effort. However, I do understand that for those who wear it more often and those who don’t wear it enough, now is the best time to do so!
This shimmer is basically a roll on that you can apply anywhere you like. Your face, eyes, body, everything is fair game.
It looks absolutely gorgeous and if you are feeling very sparkly, you could even use it as a highlighter! It lasts for a while but like any glitter it does get everywhere and will need a little top up if you want to keep it top notch.
The ingredients are very simple, just mica, dimethicone and the sparkly bits and this product lasts for 24M. It is full size and retails for £19.99. While it is absolutely gorgeous, if you take the ingredients into consideration, the price is very high. SCORE = 8/10
Maybeauty The Incredible Pore Strip
While I don’t like the act of pulling on the skin, I recognise that pore strips are very effective on removing blackheads and some dead cells.
These pore strips contain charcoal so while they look white while you wear them, they are black underneath. They fit many nose shapes and sizes but unlike the standard pore strips, you have to let these on for 30-40 minutes!
Nevertheless, the wait is totally worth it as they work very well. This pack contains 2 nose strips which last for 6M and retail for £3.50. SCORE = 9/10
Overall, I thought that Glossybox did a good job in keeping with a more festive theme. There were definitely other products they could have added to make the box even more special but overall, this was the most festive beauty box of December 2018.
Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 9/10
Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.8/10
Star product = Maybeauty The Incredible Pore Strip
