Beauty Product Discovery – Look Fantastic Beauty Box February 2019 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

February is such a nice opportunity for makeup, even if you don’t believe in or celebrate Valentines day. It’s a nice opportunity to take care of yourself, fell pretty and go out on a date. With that in mind, I had high hopes for this month’s Look Fantastic box.

The box itself was simple but elegant and beautiful, having different shades of pink and gold-pink writing. It’s typical for Look Fantastic to have simple, just coloured no designs boxes, which actually sometimes makes them more easily reusable. The pink colouring definitely suited the February vibes and although the theme was “celebrating all things romance”, the contents of the box didn’t feel particularly fitting.

This beauty box always comes with a quote under the lid and this month it said: “Love is like the sunshine trickling through clouds on a rainy day; inescapable and ever-present”. A beautiful quote that matches the theme.

The Look Fantastic box also always comes with a small monthly Beauty Magazine that has a little more information about the products contained and some other featured products, and a travel size, but full edition, of the ELLE magazine. This beauty box is such an amazing value for money. To subscribe to Look Fantastic and get £5 off your first box click here.

This month’s box contained 6 products of which 3 were full size. From left to right as seen in the picture below, the products were: an exfoliating soap, a lash curler, a hair spray, a mascara, a lipstick pencil and a contour palette.

Let’s have a look at the products in more detail. These are short reviews that cover first impressions and experiences from using the products. For full reviews, including ingredient analysis and if I would recommend a product or not, check out: Bonds of Beauty (all articles here). Bear in mind that these are my personal opinions and that beauty is a very personal thing, we all have different skin, requirements and biological build which can influence things. What worked for me might not work for you and vice versa, please leave your comments below!

Erno Laszlo Deep Sea Mud Bar

This is an exfoliating facial bar which is based on sea mud and charcoal.

It works well and the experience is pleasant however, my preferred and recommended way of exfoliation is still by using AHAs and BHAs. Additionally, although this bar is so small and cute it is still not the most practical (how do you store this after you use it?) or sanitary option. Depending on their formulation, bars can also be basic which is the opposite pH of where your skin needs to be at.

All and all, nothing against this specific product but the concept of an exfoliating bar is not one I would recommend the most.

The ingredients of this bar are very simple which is absolutely fine but sadly it also contains dyes which give it the slightly darker green colour, so that you feel psychologically that you are using charcoal and mud. Skincare-wise the dyes are completely unnecessary. Additionally, this bar has a faint cosmetic mud-like scent which is neither pleasant or unpleasant and comes from the added fragrance. Another unnecessary ingredient.

This travel size, 17g, bar lasts for 12M. A full size 100g bar retails for approximately £30. Quite a bit of money for some mud and charcoal. SCORE = 6/10

Emité Rose Gold Eye Lash Curler

Ah, eye lash curlers. You either love them or hate them. I personally don’t use them at all as I feel that they are unnecessary if you have a good mascara, and they look like some ancient bizarre medical tool. But I know that many of you love to use them and it’s testament to how beauty can be very personal!

This lash curler is very beautiful and I really like the golden-rose colour. It works well and it even comes with 3 extra silicone pads.

All you have to do is gently clamp the upper lashes and squeeze to create a curl. Don’t lamp for more than 2-3 seconds, otherwise you will end up crimping the hair instead of curling.

It’s a nice beauty tool product to find in a beauty box and everyone should own one, even if you don’t use it much.

This curler retails for approximately £20 which admittedly is quite a lot for a curler. Although it is very beautiful, works well and comes with back up pads, I have bought some before for £1-5 that worked equally well. They did feel a little cheaper though whereas this one feels and looks a little more expensive/better quality. SCORE = 8/10

Philip Kingsley Maximizer Hair Spray

This hair spray is for maximising volume, body and bounce and is specifically targeted for fine, limp and flyaway hair types. This is a great example of how Look Fantastic lacks personalisation in their beauty boxes, as it is basically a useless product to me and I’m sure to others too. I actually have long, heavy, thick, unruly hair and volume is the last thing I am interested in. In fact, I try to take away volume from my hair whenever possible!

Nevertheless, this spray did indeed give volume to my unruly hair but most importantly it actually made them smell really nice. It has a medium strength, shampoo meets perfume type of scent which is very pleasant. I might actually use this product on those days when I don’t have time to wash my hair but I still want it to look voluminous and smell like I did. Not the exact application this product was likely intended for but hey!

The bottle is plastic and very simple, having the typical Philip Kingsley branding. The pump works well and although the hair initially gets wet, and therefore, less voluminous, it picks up the volume while the product dries or if you blow dry your hair.

The ingredients are not particularly impressive, but they often aren’t in hair products anyways. The most noteworthy ingredient is hydrolysed keratin but bear in mind that this product also contains parabens, if you avoid them.

This product lasts for 12M. This bottle is a travel size, containing 60mL, but the full size 250mL bottle retails for £23.50. Not a bad price for a branded hair product. SCORE = 7/10

Doucce Punk Mascara

I wrote about this mascara before and I still feel that it is a monster! A monster sized wand which makes monster sizer eye lashes. That pretty much sums it all up. It gives huge lashes.

The outer packaging is a matte black with a dark red cap made of plastic but it doesn’t look of feel cheap at all. It opens by twisting the wand like any other mascara. The wand inside is a monster size, quite a thick brush! I thought that my eyelashes would get lost in it but actually they almost became as big as it! I guess that’s partly why this mascara works so well, the big thick wand ensures that all your lashes get coated and most importantly get coated evenly.

Really good mascara. Doesn’t feel sticky or heavy at all. Lasts as long as other mascaras and looks amazing. Doesn’t leave small black dots behind.

This is a travel size, 6mL, but the full size retails for £18. SCORE = 9/10

Lord & Berry Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intimacy

Well call it cheesy but a lipstick is what I would expect to find in a February, love, romantic makeup box.

This lip pencil works well and the colour is very beautiful too. It’s called intimacy and has a dirty pink-orange-ish shade. The lipstick goes on easily and lasts as long as other lipsticks do. It comes off with drinking or eating and does need re-touching, but that’s lipsticks in general anyways. It doesn’t feel moisturising but neither drying on the lips.

The biggest downside of this product is the fact that it is a pencil that you have to sharpen and we all know how well sharping cosmetics usually goes. It gets messy and you loose some product.

This 1.8g pencil is full size and lasts for 36M. It retails for £16 which is a little expensive considering that other lipsticks, like Urban Decay ones, retail around that price but contain a lot more product. SCORE = 7/10

Sleek Makeup Face Form Palette in Light

Sleek makeup always looks so…sleek and I love their packaging. This palette looks and feels much more expensive than it is and that’s great.

There is a huge mirror inside and it contains contour, highlighter and blush. All look beautiful and work well and blend easily. I’m so glad that I actually got the palette in the colour light, which suits my skin tone. However, the lack of personalisation means that this is again an item that will disappoint some because it will be the wrong shade.

Nevertheless, this palette works well and the £10 price is very attractive indeed. I can’t say that the highlighter specifically, is the best ever, but for the price this cute palette is good indeed.

This full size palette contains 20g of product and lasts for 24M. SCORE = 8/10

Look Fantastic February 2019 6_20190218120810696

Overall, this month’s Look Fantastic box wasn’t as exciting as I would have hoped for, considering the romantic February month but at the same time the products contained were interesting. I just wish there was that little extra wow factor considering the great opportunity that February brings for beautiful makeup.

Initial box score, in terms of products and first feelings = 7/10

Overall box score after product testing (average of product scores) = 7.5/10

Star product = Doucce Punk Mascara
