Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette – Is it any good?

Too Faced has a lot of cute-looking eyeshadow palettes in the market already and although most of them are good quality, they are not considered top notch. Until now!

The Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette was inspired by their Born This Way foundation range and the quality is much better than previous palettes! Let’s have a look at the details.

Packaging

Too Faced is known for their cute packaging which is why I was very dissapointed with the looks of the Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette.

Firstly, it is made of cardboard which is normal but Too Faced is know for their popular metallic tin eyeshadow cases and I would have preferred that because those are more durable.

Moreover, Too Faced is known for their “smell good” products and it was a slight dissapointment that this palette doesn’t smell of anything. Even though there is no obvious smell that is should have, given that it was inspired by foundation.

Finally, the design of the palette, although perfectly fitting for the inspiration and theme, it’s not true to the Too Faced cute product branding.

With all that being said though, it is still not an ugly or bad eyeshadow palette, it is actually great. These “dissapointments” come only from what we would expected typical Too Faced to be. If this palette was from any other brand, I wouldn’t even have mentioned anything wrong with the packaging.

In terms of other little details, the palette comes in outer cardboard packaging, closes magnetically and contains a mirror and a plastic sleeve to protect it from the shadows. It also comes with a small booklet that shows examples of looks and instructions on how to create them. You can also fold the palette entirely so that it sits on top of the mirror and only the shadows side is visible and vice versa meaning that it is very easy to handle with one hand.

Colours

The Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette contains 16 shades of which 8 are matte and the rest 8 are metallic.

The palette is much more beautiful inside than outside and the shades are arranged perfectly in a cute pattern. What is even more useful is that the matte colours are twice as big (1g) when compared to the metallics (0.5) which makes sense as the mattes are often used more,  especially for creasing and shading.

Althgouh the palette is inspired by the Born This Way foundation range, it still contains “non-foundation” colours like champaign, pink and an orangey brown which actually remind me of foundation undertones. The palette theme really works and it’s exciting and unique.

The palette doesn’t contain a pure white or black but you can still create nice shades with the dark brown called Truffle and can highlight with the metallic called Glistening Snow. It is a standalone palette that can give you day, night, professional and casual looks.

Pigmentation and texture

This palette is well pigmented and the shadows have a hybrid buttery-powdery texture. The colours are easily buildable which means that you can create lighter looks but also build them to more intesnse ones.

All shadows blend, swatch and translate to the eye well. Plus the metallics are absolutely gorgeous! Here’s the swatches for a closer look:

None of these shadows showed any significant kick back or fallout.

Blendability

These eye shadows are easily blendable and very easy to work with.

Longevity

I always use the Urban Decay original eye shadow primer and with that the shadows last all day, do not crease and only loose minimal to none colour intensity.

For eyeshadow primers check out: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion vs MAC Paint Pot – Which one is best?

Transfer proof tests

The shadows don’t come off if you simply touch them but of course, if you rub them they will slowly fade away.

Quality

The quality of this palette is top notch. It is noticeably better than other Too Faced eyeshadows.

Price

The Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette contains 8 x 1g and 8 x 0.5 shadows and retails for £35.

For a price of £2.92 per g of product it is slightly more expensive that the staple Too Faced Sweet Peach palette which comes to £2.86 per g.

Smell

This palette doesn’t smell of anything. There is no added scent but neither a natural one from the ingredients. There is only a faint plastic-like scent which likely comes from the packaging.

Ingredients

Eyeshadow palettes don’t often contain any nutritious for your skin ingredients but rather just the ones required to create the formulation and pigmentation. This means that there isn’t much to say in this category. If there is an ingredient found in this palette that you’d rather avoid you’d likely have a hard time finding another palette you can use as the ingredients contained are pretty standard.

However, lets immediately address the ingredient talc as there is much speculation about its safety. As a chemist I can tell you that there is no scientific proof that talc is harmful, for more information check out: Is talc in cosmetics safe?

Talc is classed as a skin irritant on its Material Safety Data Sheet (aka MSDS) however, so is table or cooking salt also known as sodium chloride and….we eat it. Pretty much almost everything can be classed as a skin irritant, especially to those with sensitive skin and these labels are very loosely defined. If you use it and you don’t get skin irritation, then there is no reason to worry. The only time when talc can be dangerous to health is if it is breathed in, in large quantities, as a free powder. So…as I’ve said before, don’t mash up this palette and breath it in.

Same goes for silica, it is only dangerous in free powder form, if you breathe it in and if it’s in large quantities or repeated breathing in exposure.

To keep this article short, I am only listing the skin nourishing or skin positive/negative ingredients and ignoring the ones that only play formulation or pigmentation purposes. For the full list of this product’s ingredients scroll down to the “full list of ingredients” section.

Ingredient positives:

  1. Polymethyl Methacrylate – Can act as a lubrication enhancer and make it easier to apply cosmetics smoothly while at the same time covering up lines and wrinkles. Depending on the type of particles it is, it can also be an absorbent.
  2. Dimethicone – Can protect the skin and even act as a conditioner. It has a smooth and silky feeling and can even fill in fine lines and wrinkles temporarily to result in a plumper look. It forms a barrier on the skin that can lock in moisture.
  3. Sodium Hyaluronate – Known in the science community as “the fountain of youth” compound. Can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so it is a king moisturiser. Helps wounds heal faster and increases collagen production leading to younger looking skin. For more info and all the sci
  4. Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice – A skin conditioner and humectant (=locks water in).
  5. Cocos Nucifera Liquid Endosperm – A skin conditioner and humectant (=locks water in).
  6. Rhododendron Ferrugineum Extract – Fragrance and skin protector.
  7. Diisostearyl Malate – A skin conditioner.
  8. Glycerin – Found naturally in the skin so can be seen as a skin replenishing ingredient. A skin conditioner that helps improve and smooth the appearance of skin. A good moisturiser that is almost always present in moisturising products.
  9. Hexyl Laurate – Skin conditioner.
  10. Water\Aqua\Eau – Self-explanatory.
  11. Hexylene Glycol – Skin conditioner.
  12. Zinc Stearate – A lubricant with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties.
  13. Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate – Skin conditioner.
  14. Magnesium Myristate – Anti-caking and opacifying agent.
  15. Beeswax\Cera Alba\Cire D’Abeille – A skin conditioner and fragrance. It issaid to help heal inflammation, bruises and burns and can also help temporarily with itching. It is particularly beneficial for dry skin as it can help moisturise and create a waterproof barrier on the skin. It can also be a source of Vitamin A.
  16. Polysorbate 20 – Can lubricate and sooth the skin.

Ingredient negatives:

N/A

Ingredients that can cause irritation to some:

This is actually really case specific, as different people have different sensitivities and allergies. Just because a compound has been reported by some to cause sensitivity, it doesn’t mean you will have an issue. “Sensitizer” compounds being present is not a negative in my opinion, as this is the case with pretty much everything out there and funnily enough I’ve seen products that are targeted specifically for sensitive skin, containing some compounds that have been reported by some, or are known to be, sensitizers.

If you have sensitive skin or you are prone to skin sensitisation and unwanted reactions, try a little bit of this at the back of your hand first and consult a medical doctor if you are concerned.

Check out: What is sensitive skin? What are the causes and what can we do?

The following compounds present in this eyeshadow palette have either been proven or claimed by some to be sensitizers, irritants, allergens etc: Polymethyl Methacrylate, Diisostearyl Malate, Hexylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol.

Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette 3

Verdict

The Too Faced Born This Way The Natural Nudes Eyeshadow Palette might not look as cute as other Too Faced products but is worth the cash. The quality of the eyeshadows is very high, much better than previous Too Faced palettes and the colours are perfect for day, night, professional and casual looks.

I recommend this palette.

The swatches look good but I don’t like the packaging, it doesn’t inspire me much, I saw it in-store but I didn’t swatch it, I’m kind of regretting it now because they actually look nice.
