Hello my lovelies,
I wanted to do two product reviews this week but I couldn’t help myself, there is something important we need to talk about. So, grab a coffee and join me in a coffee chat!
How has the lockdown been treating you? Have you tried many new things? Binge watched movies and series for hours and ate a lot of food? Yea, I’m with you. But let’s get to the intersting part, have you been wearing makeup?
I’ve been reading some articles online and comments on social media about some people thinking that wearing makeup inside is pointless and that one of the trends after this pandemic will be that people will wear less makeup. I have to say I struggle to see that, I think makeup sales will pick up again as soon as shops open. But anyhow, what I really want to address is that some people think that it’s pointless to wear makeup indoors!
Well, nothing is pointless unless you decide it is. This entire perspective comes from the misconception that people wear makeup to appeal to the opposite sex. While that might be true in some occasions, it is NOT the only reason why one would wear makeup. It is very shortsighted to think that makeup is all about others, sometimes is about the self!
I’ve written about this in previous posts, makeup can be worn as a form of self-love, self-expression and is a relatively easy way to showcase emotion and individuality. Try it out, next time you are in a crappy situation, or having a bad day, go to the bathroom and put on a red lipstick. Those couple of minutes of being with yourself and putting some war paint on can lift you up! Let’s not forget that ancient Egyptians even used red lipstick on their dead, so there are a lot of reasons to wear makeup!
This passage though is still my favourite. Lieutenant Colonel Mervin Willett Gonin who served in the British Army in 1945 wrote:
“It was shortly after the B. R. C. S teams arrived, thought it may have no connection, that a very large quantity of lipstick arrived. This was not at all what we men wanted, we were screaming for hundreds and thousands of other things and I don’t know who asked for lipstick. I wish so much that I could discover who did it, it was the action of a genius, sheer unadulterated brilliance. I believe nothing did more for those internees than the lipstick. Women lay in bed with no sheets and no nightie but with scarlet lips, you saw them wandering about with nothing but a blanket over their shoulders, but with scarlet lips. I saw a woman dead on the post mortem table and clutched in her hand was a piece of lipstick. Do you see what I mean? At last someone had done something to make them individuals again, they were someone, no longer merely the number tattooed on the arm. At last they could take an interest in their appearance. That lipstick started to give them back their humanity.”
For more information about wearing makeup being more than just appealing to the opposite sex in this post: Why do we use make up…and should we?
Personally, wearing makeup has also helped me separate my days. I dress up as normal and wear my work makeup to get into work mood while working from home. It really helps to know and feel that it is work time, even though I’m home.
So while you are stuck indoors, take the opportunity to practice on that eyeliner or contour skill that you feel is a little behind. Experiment with new eyeshadow looks and try out new products. Wear makeup if you want to or give your skin a little break! Whatever works for you, for the day, for the mood, but don’t let anyone tell you that wearing makeup is for the outdoors!
Lots of love,
