Look Fantastic Beauty Box March 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

Well, it looks like my Look Fantastic January “complaint” was just situational, as the Look Fantastic box has continued to arrive first, before any other beauty boxes, during February and March. It had an artistic beauty look to it, gorgeous colour combinations and as always was high quality. The Look Fantastic boxesRead more

Elsa’s Natural Deodorant Stick in Scent Ocean – A Chemist’s Verdict: In Depth Review and Ingredient Analysis.

As a fitness minded person, I am always working out and running around and even though I am a woman, and we smell like roses, that’s a fact, I do sweat! Revelation! As a result, I have been looking for a good and reliable deodorant for a while now. I have been quite disappointed by the mass market deodorants, mainly because they either stain my clothes, last only for a while, mix with my sweat smell and make me smellRead more

Birchbox Beauty Box February 2018 – Unboxing and Product Reviews

February is already here and although I am still wondering where January has gone, I was excited to open this month’s beauty boxes. February is often referred to as the month of love and although I agree that Valentines day is a highly commercialised celebration, I personally love every opportunity that comes along to show ourselfs and others some love. Whether you choose to buy yourself or your close ones a gift or celebrate at all, I think it makesRead more

Honey in cosmetics – Is it worth seeking out?

Honey is one of those ingredients that don’t need much introduction. It is one of the most used substances in the world, arguably one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients throughout human history. [1] In fact there are reports that it was used even as far back as 4500 BC in Egypt, in eye cosmetics [2] and it is even known that Egyptian women used honey, mixed with sodium bicarbonate, for vaginal irrigations! [3] If you think that is incredibly bizarre,Read more

Skin whitening products might contain illegal substances

I’ve accidentally bumped onto a research paper published in the Archives of Toxicology which writes about a very worrying concept. In this paper the authors claim that not all commercialised cosmetics in European countries follow the EU regulations for safety. They went as far as picking 163 samples, specifically skin whitening products, of which 40% of them contained a potent corticosteroid clobetasol propionate and about 12% were found to contain tretinoin or hydroquinone.[1] The mentioned substances are usually found inRead more

Can the appearance of scars be improved with moisturisers?

Most of us have a scar or two, some more serious than others, and while some of those we might have acquired with pride, there are others that we’d rather forget. Sometimes due to emotional or traumatic reasons but most of the time it comes down to what we perceive as beauty. It is common knowledge and almost common sense nowadays that in order to keep your skin healthy, you must keep it well hydrated. But is there any scientificRead more

Vitamin A in skin care – Is it worth it?

Vitamin A is an essential compound for a normal and healthy human function. Like other vitamins, it takes part in a variety of bodily functions including maintenance of: the immune system, good vision, teeth, bones, soft tissue membranes and skin and it even takes part in blood synthesis and brain function. However, while this is an essential ingredient for our bodies, humans do not have the capability of synthesising it and therefore our intake relies solely on our diet. VitaminRead more

Vitamins C & E – Do they work in skin care?

Vitamins C and E are vital for our body to function normally. Vitamin C protects cells while keeping them working normally, leading to healthy skin, blood vessels, bones and cartilage. It is an essential part of collagen synthesis [1] and skin lipid synthesis [1, 2] making it an effective anti-ageing and moisturising ingredient and it helps protect against, and reverse, the effects of UV light (this is clinically proven by many scientific studies!). If you are still not convinced, thereRead more
